NBA Off-season thread: Duncan and Garnett retire

How did they lie? They offered him a contract below what he wanted and got somewhere else

Buckets, if you don't think that Mickey and Pat told Wade he'd get taken care of for taking less, I've got a bridge for sale.

It would be one thing if the Heat offered $40M and no one else offered more (it would still be shitty). However, at least two teams offered more. It's a gross insult not to have matched those offers for the single most important person in the history of the franchise.

Plus, it not like he was asking for something outrageous. They lost the face of their franchise over a crummy $5M/year.

Riley showed that NO ONE EVER should believe him about anything. He talks about family, tradition and team and screwed the guy who gave over and over to help Riley succeed.

I think the biggest hindrance in the bmoney post is the Bogut trade. I for some reason doubt the Mavs back out.

But the scenario is why the dead period and max deals are stupid

what did they do? From everything I read DWade continually took less money to get Lebron and Bosh paid. He then negotiates with the Heat last year and this year, they pony up, and this year he decides $7 mil is worth leaving the Heat. I don't really see where he has been lied to. But maybe i've missed something, he certainly has seemed pissed at them for no real reason the last two seasons besides his buddy LBJ wants him to screw them over.

Seems like the Heat played this perfectly. They didn't want to be tied to a 35yo SG that was injury prone and wouldn't age well, and Wade came off like a drama queen and did the dirty work for them.

Riley was pissed Wade chose lebron over him when Wade never gave them the heads up he was leaving. Wade opted out that year of 2 years left on his deal at the max, then signed back for less than the max. Lebron cost him that money, and Wade blamed the Heat and not Lebron or himself.

He'd have been taken care of if he didn't choose lebron over the Heat, but he did. So it gave the Heat the out of not having to waste 3 years giving him a Kobe contract. What's happenned to the Lakers the past 3 years hasn't helped Wade at all.

Riley also likes to keep everything in house and Wade pulling all the social media stunts trying to leverage them just made it an ego battle, one that a 35 year old SG was gonna lose. Today will be the last day anyone cares about Dwayne Wade.

Exactly. It's not Pat's fault that he doesn't want to overpay for a 35 year old who has his game completely tied to athleticism. If Wade didn't take the deal over 5-7million when it's been shown many times that if you play nice with the heat to help them with the cap they will more than take care of you when you retire like they have with multiple "heat lifers" getting high paying jobs within the organization. Wade is the one that looks bad here from everything i've seen.

Spot on.

Agreed. It would have been stupid to overpay Wade and let the franchise go the way of the Lakers.

Riley is a genius. This worked according to plan.

Yeah assuming Bosh is able to come back healthy and after resigning Whiteside, Miami would have been the one East team potentially capable of beating Cleveland (unlikely but injuries do happen) with Wade in the fold

So basically Riley is a little bitch who got his feelings hurt by the guy who SAVED his career. Remember, Riley hadn't won shit as a GM from 89-2005.

The Lakers had NO talent and a horrible owner. This was about a CRUMMY $5M for this year (the upping of the cap would take care of the next $5M). It was only for two years and for virtually no money in the new NBA.

Riley showed all good players never to believe him again. He doesn't care about anyone but Riley.
