Official November 8, 2016 Election Day Thread

just know, Trump supporters, Hillary was right about the amount of deplorables out there (maybe a little conservative on her estimate), and you stand with them. you share their values. hope you're proud.

Yep. At the least, you tolerate bigotry

Can we stop pretending that bkf had his pulse on the mood of the country, instead of just being surrounded by Trump voters?

Are we ready to look at what went wrong, or do we want to yell at BKF for 10 more pages instead?

As Cam Newton would say, hindsight is 50/50 but watching it unfold, I feel bad I didn't join BKF in seeing this company. I will regrettably being picking up quite a few dinner checks I was looking forward to laying down over the next six months.

So what do you all think went wrong (try to exclude from your answer the other guy's persistently alleged raciosm; hint: that might be part of the problem)?

It's small wonder that this positive vision of America didn't resonate. It's always the other guy's racisom, isn't it?

If this was about "draining the swamp", how come all of the incumbents are still with us? They need to lose that phrase, it's a lie.

Considering the outcome, aren't those the same thing?

Of course not. Imagine if he lived in Charlotte and based his predictions on the conversations he had with his neighbors.

Let alone the fact that Hillary is going to win the PV.

Participation Trophy pick-up is on Thursday. Sorry about the rigged election.

Initial analysis would indicate that Clinton couldn't turn out the base. Turnout was down across the board, but up in rural white America. One candidate excited the ideological reaches of their base, and the other offended them. She ran in the middle, he grabbed the right. It was a winning strategy. KellyAnne Conway better actually get paid, because she finally got him to follow directions enough to not lose too much of the middle. The GOP has done an outstanding job of spinning their outsider status to gain control of everything despite low approval ratings. It will be interesting to see if they keep that up over the next 4 years. I would guess that yes they will continue to paint us commielibs as the establishment.

yeah that's the thing. I heard so much that Americans are sick of the Washington establishment -- but the same party retains both houses of Congress? Change we can believe in, indeed.

Try to keep up. No one's claiming the PV win means anything. But if you listened to bkf, you would think that it was a landslide victory.

It's very easy to confuse victory with vindication (I know a local Republican Party who made that mistake...). The Dem coalition didn't have room for poor white people, so it kicked them out. It took finding a candidate who noticed that was unclaimed territory to bring them back in.

She was a dreadful candidate who just kept springing leaks. It was truly the death of 1,000 cuts, and try as they might her surrogates couldn't patch the holes fast enough. As bad as she was, the absence of her message was worse and proved to be her undoing.

Trump won not because he had the right answers, but because he had the right questions. You're not going to get turnout with the thrust of your message being "It's my turn, the other guy is raciost, and if you don't vote for me, you probably are too." I know that many will deny that was the message, but just watch the Facebook hand-wringing gold. Person A's sense of entitlement or Person B's raciosm is not a solution for Person's C problems (and thus, small incentive for Person C to go vote). We can call Person C a name if it makes us feel better, but promising to bring more Syrian refugees isn't going to lower Person C's health care premiums or grow the economy a fourth percentage point.

For all of his many faults, Trump counted the people who no longer counted to either major party. He spoke to the so-called deplorables and the lesson of 2016 is that the 2020 winner will also.

Do I think Trump will magically fix this? No, of course not. But if you want him to win again, keep blaming other people's alleged hatred for this loss, rather than a lack of credible solutions.

Well, we learned at least one thing from this election. There are a lot of spoiled & privileged WF millennial elitists on this board who don't have a clue as to what is going on out there with real people in the real world.

(Of course, it's not only millennials. Guys like RJ, DeacsPop & Wake&Bake proved that they don't have a clue, either.)

Fuck off. This is dumb. All the predictive models and all the polling data indicated that Hillary was winning this thing, bigly. All models are wrong but some models are useful and the only thing many of us are guilty of is believing these models are/were useful. Turns out they were flawed beyond utility or the input data were not sampling to population appropriately. Not whiny millennialness, at worst gullibility.

It's completely naive to deny that racism and nationalism played no role in Trump's appeal to rural white America. I grew up there. I don't think that represented his entire coalition, and I can't say that Trump himself is racist, but he knew what he was doing by tempering his condemnation of those movements. He is going to win again, because no candidate exists on the horizon with the kind of name recognition to unseat Trump as an incumbent. He will have 8 years of full party control in Washington. I would like to think that we'll gain back some power in his second midterms, but we don't vote enough in midterms. Best bet is to start an 8-year rebuild.

For bkf purposes before he reams me for being a millennial stuck up pussy, I am 52 and own my own business.

I for one am somewhat worried we might be cruising towards another GWB second term meltdown where the economy takes a nosedive because no one wants to regulate shit.

Yes, surely BKF is the one licking his wounds this morning for his November 7th bravado. I'll try to keep up with that breaking news.

Fuck that. If the DNC isn't developing their 2018 strategy right now, they need to just pack up and go home.

Even a blind pig finds a pile of shit every so often. Luckily for bkf, his #feelings ended up being right this time.

My point is that fixating on everyone else's raciosm isn't a winning strategy. See last night. You need a better message than "Yeah, but he's racist."

Great. You've called your opponent a name. Now what? Six more months of fear mongering and name-calling didn't turn people out.

Dems are now in the unenviable position of having sold the Trumpocalypse that may never arrive. WTH are they going to do if Trump doesn't deliver on mass deportation threat?
