Wake Forest's own Tommy Elrod caught leaking football information to other teams

The country-club, job-for-life atmosphere Grobe fostered on his staff continues to bite us in the ass

So true. You'd think somebody would have gotten a statement from Grobe about this by now. At the very least, a "no comment" or "I'm shocked Tommy would do something like this."

Truth... Louisville admits guilt and is publicly shamed but nothing else happens. If this was UNC or Duke, Swofford would have released a statement and sanctioned FSU back to the stone age. I highly doubt that the ACC will slap down Louisville or than a fine or something. What will the B1G do to Indiana if it is discovered they had cheated as well?

Few things are more damaging to any sport than the insinuation that the competition is not real, that somehow it is fixed. Not to punish cheating is to surrender all credibility. Nonetheless, UL generates a ton more $$$ for the conference than WF.

Waiting on Indiana now....

They did fire their HC last week, and didnt say a whole lot about why other than "off the field issues". Lots of insinuation about player treatment, but never confirmed. Given the timing, conceivable that IU fired him at least in part because of his staff (Knorr) being complicit with Elrod 2 years ago.

I can see WFU giving IU their information, IU responding with this, and Wake viewing that as appropriate and never mentioning IU being involved.

There's still plenty of day-light left in Waco, he's just making the turn on his second 18 of the day.

My favorite part of the Louisville statement is the detail about how Elrod and Galloway have been friends since 2007. Of course those longtime buddies would chat about game plans!

Wellman forced this out of Louisville. He slyly informed them we have the email yesterday in his statement.

But he's a slow learner so he didn't use Galloway's intel until the 2nd half. :tard:

This is a pretty annoying type of comment people keep dropping to mock our team.

The Louisville game was not a traditional blowout. We were great in the 1st half, our defense played well, and we had 4 straight scoring drives all end in field goals. It could have been 24-0 heading into the half were it not for a handful of key plays killing drives. They didn't take a lead until 10 minutes left in the 4th.

Louisville lost to a mediocre Houston team in their very next game in almost the exact same way, except they were down 31-0 because Houston scored TD's.

Self-loathing aside, it is absolutely possible that this cheating robbed Wake of a potential upset of the #6 team in the country.

"sometimes disgruntled coaches share specific game planning information prior the game. not maliciously, though."

Not sure about all this. We ran the orbit for the only time I can recall all season. We actually gave the ball to the flanker in motion, instead of faking, and Louisville tackled hm for a 5 yard loss. It was like their defensive end knew it was coming. That was especially suspicious given this situation.

Yep.

I would LOVE to hear Elrod's color comments after that.

A few further thoughts. First, I'd be surprised if money exchanged hands over this information. As an opposing coach, you'd have to think that this stuff may well be disinformation. You might accept the intel, keep its content in the back of your mind and evaluate its authenticity as the game goes on. But no way would you pay for it. Especially considering you're not talking about the Michigan/tOSU game - you're talking about a sub .500 ACC team. Why put yourself further out on a limb if you're an opposing coach? So I have to believe the motive was pure retribution, not pecuniary.

Apparently, the investigation has produced phone records and maybe more? How the eff stupid are you if you're Elrod. If you're going to commit treason, you gotta know the rest of your career is toast if you're ever discovered. So don't leave an electronic or paper trail. Which means don't use your work phone or email account. Reminds me of when I ask friends who are cops why idiot criminals do such stupid things in failing to cover up what they've done. And their response is usually to say don't put your standards on what most criminals do because most of them are stupid, and that's why some of the smart ones don't get caught.

Lastly, why publicize this information if you're Wake? It's just a yuge black eye that can also be used for negative recruiting. Why not instead quietly fire Elrod, confront him with what you have and tell him if he doesn't get his ass out of Winston-Salem in the next month and comply with your other requests, that the info will be made public which will prevent him from any future employment in the industry.

The only person who doesn't have an interest in keeping quiet is the current staff. The administration "Wellman" has inadvertently created a hostile work environment. If you are Clawson you don't say that's ok no big deal, you make sure you get those years added in to next contract. It would be in Wake's and the conference's best interest for this to go away. A current coaching staff doesn't want the blame for some on the inside sabotaging them.

I mean, I don't blame Grobe or Riley or whoever for not wanting to believe that someone they think a lot of isn't capable of this, but there's no way this wasn't intentional or malicious. If there was any doubt, Wake would not have made the statements that have been made.

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said in a statement Wednesday that offensive coordinator Lonnie Galloway received "a few plays" from former Wake Forest radio announcer Tommy Elrod, who has since been fired for leaking confidential information to the Demon Deacons' opponents.

Galloway and Elrod have known each other since 2007 and worked together on the Wake Forest football staff from 2011 to 2012.

"Lonnie received a call from Elrod during the week of the Wake Forest game, and some information was shared with him that week," Jurich said in a statement. "Among the communication were a few plays that were sent and then shared with our defensive staff. None of the special plays were run during the course of the game. Our defense regularly prepares for similar formations every week in their normal game plan.

"Any other information that may have been discussed was nothing that our staff had not already seen while studying Wake Forest in their preparations for the game and the material was not given any further attention. Wake Forest launched an investigation into its football program last month, after a sheet featuring its own plays was discovered inside Papa John's Cardinal Stadium the day before its Nov. 12 game against Louisville. Shortly after the investigation was launched, coach Bobby Petrino said in a statement he had "no knowledge of the situation."
