Danny Manning Credibility Watch

And Collins and Crawford and Chaundee Brown.

But he's not getting fired. If he does, we are screwed very badly. No one we'd want will want to take our job after firing a legendary player, who took on a total dumpster fire and didn't get to even use his first Top 30 recruit.

The job becomes a lot more attractive to potential new coaches if a new AD was in place to make the hire. Fresh slate and all that.

I think Manning's fate will be decided by the 2018 recruiting class he is currently putting together and next season's performance. We should have a very clear picture of where the program is heading by the end of next basketball season.

Personally, I'm not excited about the current pool of potential coaching replacements nor the possibility of another extended rebuild. So hopefully, Manning pans out.

I agree that the next hire needs to be made whoever our new AD is.

Who is the best realistic replacement anyway? Will Wade at VCU?

Unless a new AD has a connection to a particular coaching candidate, Wellman continuing as AD won't expand or limit the coaches interested in the WF basketball job. There are legit grounds for the anti-RW feelings here, but to the pool of college coaching candidates, Wellman is not a net-negative as an AD. If anything, he and WF maintain a reputation as more patient/reasonable with its hiring/firing decisions than most Power V schools. Also, success (even limited success) will be rewarded; see, the recent DC extension. The fact that Wellman made an abysmal hire with [] is not going to hurt him whenever he looks for coaches again.

If Manning crashes and burns at WF, the hurdle for WF is not going to be the AD, but that it's a job where its too hard to build a winner.

I just do not agree with this premise when discussing a relatively new coach.

I think Wellman might limit the candidate pool some simply because it's clear he is near the end of his tenure making who your boss will be an open question.

Yeah, I could see this, but I'm not too worried about his effect on what prospective coaches may think of the job. On the other hand, I am terrified at the thought of who he may hire for the job.

Unless Manning completely reverses course we won't be looking for a new coach until 2019 at the earliest, and that's only if both the 2016 and 2018 classes are a total bust.

I am getting really nervous about putting this much pressure on a player (Brown) who has yet to even lace up.

What RJ said (first time I've probably ever said that).

We basically just need him to be better than Arians. I don't expect Chaundee to shoot that well but nearly every other aspect of his game should be an upgrade over Arians.

If he can play 25 minutes a game of above average D, hit 35%+ from 3 and attack the rim then we are a top 25 team next year.

Interestingly enough, Arians has the highest offensive rating in the ACC in conference games so far. Obviously his defense is an issue.

On basketball you have said it many times.

Hell, Wrangor and I agree about 3/4 of the time RE: bball.

This team is better than the 07-08 team. They brought back everyone of note, added Aminu, and were the #1 team in the country for one week before collapsing.

Aminus role on that team was basically defense, rebounding and garbage buckets. They play different positions and I don't expect Chaundee to be as good as Aminu was year 1, but I think his role will be somewhat similar.

You shouldn't include others that aren't privy to the conversation to try and justify your own opinions. That's a bad move.

We have to disagree on this one. James was better all around as a frosh than JC is. Ish and JT are both pro PGs. That's a lot better than Bryant at this point. LD, Harvey and Clark were better than Wilbekin, Arians and Brandon. Chas/Weaver/Jamie were better at that time than Dions/Doral/McClinton are.

07/08 was a much better defensive and rebounding team and much, much, much more athletic.

yea i gotta agree with rj on this one, even if stats don't

I din't include anyone to justify my opinion. All I said was that Wrangor and I agree on basketball a lot. That's stating a fact.

You are injecting value judgments not me.

This is an extremely cold take. Yikes.

The fact that a team with:

James Johnson (fr.)
Jeff Teague (fr.)
Ish Smith (so.)
Jamie Skeen (so.)
Chase McFarland (so.)

...went 17-13 against the 61st toughest schedule in the country is mind-boggling. I know I'm thinking of them as where they are now/what they became as a pro player, but holy cow that's a lot of talent to miss the postseason.

No shooting at all on that team though. 32% from behind the arc on the year.
