State's next coach?

Seeing as how their #1 choice (assuming the BD thing isn't real) is still coaching a team in the Final Four, I think it will be at least until VCU loses.

Smart is not their number 1 choice. No way. More like 5th or 6th.

PackPride gem:

"So many threads discussing coaching search that it is impossible to read it all. So I apologize if this has already been discussed. Debbie could shock the you know what out of us with a hire of Geno Auriemma from the UConn woman's team. Impeccable record, unmatched number of championships, success everywhere he has coached. Everything Debbie said she was looking for. Would it work?"

State has EVERYTHING to lose by hiring another Sidney Lowe. They need a sure thing. What they don't need is a sink or swim guy. They swung for the fences with Lowe, and struck out. Strike out again, and that program will officially be in defcon 5. The fanbase thinks Debbie Yow is going to bring them a great coach. Shaka is the definition of an "Incomplete" if you're grading a coach's potential.

This analogy is used pretty poorly on these boards. A kid gets an incomplete if they were somehow unable to complete an assignment.

Any coach who is coaching in the Final Four does not get an "incomplete". That's the final exam and Shaka got an A++. He's just going for extra credit at this point. Not only did he make the Final Four, he did it in dominant fashion.

At this point, State needs someone that can help rebuild its shambolic program. As a program builder, Shaka is someone who hasn't proven a damn thing. He's winning with Anthony Grant's team.

Agreed. Smart is obviously a very talented motivator and in-game coach, but what have we seen him do recruiting wise? Absolutely nothing.

And this goes to my point about the hype he is currently receiving. I just don't think that can be dismissed. Making the final four from VCU results in a complete profile change. Before this tournament, he calls up a guy and says "I am Shaka Smart." Some (most) players will have never heard of him. Now, for the last week, he has been on every show, receiving unbelievable amounts of hype. So, if he calls now, the player will listen and (likely) be interested.

Throw in the fact that Smart seems to handle the press incredible well, seems incredibly intelligent, and, oh yeah, seems to be able to coach lesser players pretty well, and I think any notion that he is an "incomplete" at this point is ludicrous. He would be a great hire for NCSU. 3 or 4 more years of ineptness would be frustrating for NCSU, but would not change anything about them or the attractiveness of the job, etc. Hence, they have nothing to lose.

Knowing Chairman Yao... this is a distinct possibility.

And this goes to my point about the hype he is currently receiving. I just don't think that can be dismissed. Making the final four from George Mason results in a complete profile change. Before this tournament, he calls up a guy and says "I am Jim Larranaga." Some (most) players will have never heard of him. Now, for the last week, he has been on every show, receiving unbelievable amounts of hype. So, if he calls now, the player will listen and (likely) be interested.

I'm a little less worried about recruiting when I see a coach take a bunch of transfers and less heralded recruits go out and dominate Georgetown, Purdue, and Kansas.

You've seen the VCU 3 point stat, right? Sometimes a team gets hot and shoots out of their minds.

The concern over Shaka Smart's recruiting ability is really a non issue.* At Clemson, it has been known for some time that Shaka Smart was going to make big waves on the national basketball scene.* From a recruiting standpoint, he was responsible for recruiting Demontez Stitt, Jerai Grant, Tanner Smith, Andre Young & established the relationship in order to land us Milton Jennings.* He actually convinced Jennings to committ.* That's just on this past year's team.* Demontez and Jerai alone accounted for the majority of our offense. * Smart's ability to relate and come across as a likable guy in his press conferences and interviews transfers over to the recruiting trail.*

That's from a Clemson fan. With Smart now being in the Final Four, young, energetic, passionate, black (don't get worked up over this, just from my friends playing D1 I know that at least for some kids it's a bonus, and you can never have too many small advantages in recruiting), has a ton of hype, and seeming like a really cool and intelligent guy, I think recruiting is the last thing we need to worry about. The guy definitely has potential to be an ace recruiter.

Why is Sean Miller considered by NCSU fans to be an "A List" coach? I saw a post on their board that ranked him with Donovan, Barnes, Jay Wright, etc.

I'll say

At this point it is based on what I have seen.

At this point he might be their number one choice, but only after missing on as many as 6 other candidates (Barnes, Miller, Pastner, Mack, Donovan, and Turgeon).

And sometimes that team gets bounced in the first round.

People are just picking nits trying to knock back my BOI, Shaka Smart. About to go on a neg repping rampage in his honor.

Did Anthony Grant take these players to the Final Four?

Do some pos repping while you're at it.

I know I'm new to these types of forums, but I thought Moderators were supposed to be above such childish actions.
