John Collins is #2 in KP's All-ACC Ratings

People are underestimating the trajectory Collins is on considering his age. He's got good quickness, great hands, a decent handle, and a nice shot. He may not be a freak athletically but he can certainly elevate. He'll continue to add size and strength to his frame, and could only be an offseason away from adding borderline college 3 point range to his game. Wake could really be an elite team next year with Brown on the way, and the best center in the ACC on a tourney team would have a great shot at a top 10 pick.

Guys in his position have come back, but there's no doubt the "smart" move is to jump. He's probably choosing between 2 very good outcomes, and while the short run pain for Wake is real, it's also a recruiting win for Manning. Fallout from being better is the good kind of fallout.

Tristan is a good comp imo

I think JC has a little more offensive game and a little less athleticism

JC is way more advanced offensively than Tristan Thompson and is far more athletic. JC isn't as strong, but that might come. Thompson is a better rebounder at this point.

Thompson is bigger and longer and can defend centers in the NBA, that's his key value ... you can play him as a small ball 5 and not get destroyed in the paint or on the glass. Collins is going to have to convince people he can do the same. In a league going to tons of 4 out / 1 in sets - there just isn't room for post playing pure PF's.

Huh? No he isn't.

Yes, Collins will need to find a role and it isn't super clear. He will likely need to learn to be able to shoulder the defense and rebounding necessary to be a small ball 5 or learn to shoot 3s. Vad is 100% correct about 4 out in the modern NBA.

The big question mark for NBA teams that they'll try to solve about JC is defense. Nobody wants Okafor because he is an abomination on defense. NBA teams just relentlessly attack him on the pNr because he has awful heavy feet.

Tristan Thompson is worth every penny of his relatively high contract because he's a great defender.

JC doesn't appear to have bad feet but he also hasn't showcased that he will translate there either, because of his context of being so important to Wake that he can't be aggressive at all and that CBB is officiated like trash.

Sometimes guys can become great NBA defenders out of nowhere. Big knock on Draymond that let him fall to the 2nd round was he was a tweener that had no position to guard in the NBA. Turns out he was a tweener that could guard every position in the NBA once he got in great shape.

I don't like the Tristan comp. Dude is an elite garbage man, but that's the extent of his offensive game.

I think Collins develops a 3 point shot for the league.

I think an interesting early comparison might be Richaun Holmes? He's looked good when he's played and (apparently) has quite a bit of trade value around the league

OK, we all love JC, but let's slow down here. He's taken all of one (1) three this season.

Right. Al Horford attempted 4 three pointers in his entire college career and missed all 4. Collins is a much better free throw shooter and really only started shooting mid-range jumpers this year. He's got a great shot at developing into a good shooter.

Juice mentioned Taj Gibson a while back and it's a good one because it's a PF that doesn't shoot 3s and is good. He may not be athletically there as of right now and Taj is a good defender but you're also not usually in your athletic prime at 19 either even tho there are some freaks who are. At 24 JC should be more explosive in all facets.

That doesn't mean much. KAT made 2 total threes at Kentucky. But he shot mid range jumpers well and shot a great FT% so people thought he could expand and he has.

some of those post moves yesterday looked like duncan

Taj is 31. He came out of USC at about 24.

I think this post will be one of the rare ones on the board that everyone will agree with.

We need to hold hands and pray to be basketball gods, deities of every faith, all that is holy and everything that help with luck, that JC doesn't get drafted by the Rockets.

Let's us pray!

He runs faster, jumps higher and has more lateral quickness. Thompson is much stronger.

Thompson has always looked pretty quick to me. Hence his ability to switch and match up on smaller players. May just be superior instincts tho. JC can flat run end to end about as well as any big man I've seen lately.

I know this is a Bz joke but Rockets would be a cool spot with their scheme and tempo.

Chad Ford has him up to #19 to Atlanta. If her's consistently in that #18-25 range, he's gone and should be.
