My niece is studying abroad in Cusco, Peru. It's her spring break. She traveled to Chile - alone - and her backpack was stolen off her back in the northern part of the country last night. She's got no money, no credit cards, no passport, no phone, nothing. She borrowed enough money from a stranger to get on a computer at an internet cafe to email her parents. She's been wired $400 but has no ID, so evidently she'll need to use a code that they hope the locals will accept. Then she has to get to Santiago, 17 hours away, so she can get her passport replaced. It's my understanding that she'll then have to fly directly home as the passport will only allow her to return to the US.

What a cluster. I can't believe she traveled alone. My sister-in-law is losing her mind.

Do you need a prescription to get your contacts renewed in Chile? I think I read in the CT that she can order contacts from Canada and that she'll get them fine. No worries!

Hahahahahhhh, just a little intra-thread humor there. Good luck to your niece! Rubbins could also probably put together a team, working in shifts.

I had my passport stolen in Dublin, got a replacement passport next day at the embassy that was valid for I think 3 months. I was traveling on to France for a couple of weeks. When I went home I mailed it in and got a full 10-year replacement passport. Only problem was it had my photo of me from being up all night and with long, shaggy hair thanks to my semester abroad. Glad to finally have that replaced last summer.

Yeah, of course I'm dealing with an understandably hysterical sister-in-law so that must be considered. I don't know where the passport info came from, but that's what she was told. Hopefully per that link it's bad info.

does she have a copy of her passport? that was very helpful when picking up the money that my parents wired me.

I'm sure everything will work out, so not intending to make light of what is assuredly a stressful situation for your family, but holy shit this sounds like a great premise for a reality TV show:

NO WALLET. NO ID. NO PASSPORT. NO CLOTHES. [ed note: this is the only thing that would make this cooler, if the contestant was naked] THE FINISH LINE IS 17 HOURS AWAY. DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO SURVIVE?

Dude, this is siff's niece. I know siff has a beautiful family, but this goes too far.
