Men's Golf

Sadly, looks like we would have been much better off in one of the Louisiana regionals. At least the Deacs went down to 3 storied programs, but ISU and Ole Miss was unexpected.

I have complete confidence we would have screwed up that regional also.

Maybe they took out a few trees before the final round.

or cut the rough and made gigantic fairways...Actually on second thought that might actually make it tougher especially if there are surrounding hazards. playing in a tournament down at Tiburon made me wish there was heavy rough by the end of the weekend.

Not a lot of private schools on there. Do they have better depth than we do?

You would be hard pressed to find anybody in the NCAA who has better depth than we do.

Our 6th-8th players have all played extensively on our team in the past. Waugh was one of the best players on the team as a freshman, and Kyle Sterbinsky finished top 15 in the ACC and NCAA Regionals last year. Neither played much this year except to fill in for injuries.

Then why do we suck in the postseason? Is haas just not good at pep talks? Does he screw up swings over the course of the year? It seems like college golf wouldn't involve much more than recruiting.

I think it's a combination of not being able to keep players hungry/motivated at the end of the year and a losing #culture.

It could be that golf is a high variance sport and we have wound up on the short end of the stick a lot of years.

I mean we could fire Haas, get a coach who doesn't recruit as well, but "gives good pep talks", which would likely put us in the same place. We would be a No. 40 seed each year and then either overachieve to make the NCAA Championships, or achieve at an expected level and not make the Championships.

Give me a talent full of roster year in and year out and I will take that every single time over a team that's less talented. We were ranked 10th in the country for a reason.

What does Haas even do for the team outside of planning, some strategy, and all the recruiting? All of these guys have their own swing coaches, so it's not like Haas is turning them into bad players, also clear since we had one of our best regular seasons ever.

People don't want to hear "oh it's just bad luck", but yeah, that happens, especially in golf, even over long periods of time.

FWIW a very accomplished friend of mine will be attending Wake in a few years for golf. He and his family really liked Coach Haas during the process. They turned down offers from Auburn, UVA, and Clemson.

Players to whom I have spoken all really like Haas and appreciate his connections in the golf world. Most have their own established swing coaches (sometimes their Dad) and will send videos if they need instruction. A large part of the coach's job is to determine which players participate in any given tournament - this involves a qualification process (qualifying rounds at OTC/FCC/etc and past tournament results) plus discretionary coach's picks.

Everything about golf bores me to tears, but in every sport, without exception of any kind, I'd rather recruit the best players and hope they don't play down than recruit gym/course rats and hope they play up.

Right, and with the season on the line this season our No. 5 player (presumably the "last" guy in the lineup) shot a 65. Sounds like Haas made the right choice there.

Our No. 65th ranked player in the nation finished in dead last on our team by a mile as the No. 2 guy. He was always going to play, so not a lot that could have been done there.

I think this is where I am.

I can think of another Wake coach that brought in top talent and struggled for several years before he put it all together with 4 straight final fours. Jay Vidovich

And it could be argued that our style of play was probably a factor in that much more so than any influence Haas would have.

If Haas is recruiting at an elite level, it would be crazy to overreact based on the fact that McBride had a terrible week.

The guy has won 3 NCAA regionals and has a pair of top 3-4 national finishes.

Not a lot of private schools on there. Do they have better depth than we do?

there are 2 privates schools on there, Stanford and USC

Stanford has outperformed WF in golf (and almost every other sport)

USC has not, at least at nationals; they have a grand total of 0 team national championships ever

Unlike many other sports, golf outcomes don't necessarily build on previous outcomes. Look at the pros... Danny Willett wins the Masters and has his caddy fire him because he can no longer make a cut. Hideki Matsuyama won everything in sight back in Dec-Jan time frame and has dropped off considerably. Course conditions, greens, layout all set up for some players more than others. So, it is disappointing that our #2 guy has a bad week when he did, but that is golf. If you had said one of our guys missed an easy putt that cost us advancement, then I would say that is Wake Forest golf...

What a great time to be a Wake fan .. the best female golfer in the country, the best male golfer in the country and three of the final 16 in the men's tennis draw.

Great baseball team just won a game in the acc tournament as well.

Can it get any better?

Well, yeah. I'm a little disappointed that I never hear anything about the men's wrestling team.

Conference or national championships would be better.
