A rainy opening night?

We should not expect to sell many tickets when we play Big South teams. Nobody cares, and rightly so, regardless of the weather conditions.

I know we get ND every few years, but it would be nice if our non-conference schedule were a little more beefed up. Those OOC Stanford and Nebraska games were pretty sweet.

Playing a I-AA doormat, a couple of Group of 5 lowlifes and a service academy here and there provides little excitement.

And my last request, get rid of the season opening Thursday night games. The empty seats look embarrassing on TV.

Attendance is tickets sold, not people through turnstiles.

They probably count tickets they give out for free and everything as well. Hell every time a ticket is printed probably is the standard.

The OOC Schedule has not really ever changed much over the past 15 years and the formula makes sense:

Play one 1-AA team
Play one Power V Conference Team or ND
Play two games against non-Power V FBS schools

While not a sexy name, App State is better than several Power V Schools (lost at Tennessee in OT last year; 13 point dog at UGA Saturday), and Utah State has been a bowl team in recent years.

Given that the ACC is better than it has ever been and given that WF is locked in to playing FSU, Clemson and L'ville every year; really hard to justify playing two Power V schools OOC. For example, WF already plays at ND this year; just don't see it in WF's interest to drop Presby and play Stanford or Baylor instead. Schedule is already among the toughest as it is.

Won't be a problem this year. No TV for the first 3 games. I can't believe that the BC game isn't being televised.

The plan seems to be to win OOC games against a Presbyterian, a Utah State, an Army & a bottom-rung P5....then if you can go 2-6 in the conference you can say you were a bowl team.

That's what the plan should be. Smart scheduling to build a program. Especially when you play in the hardest division in the country.

Why play a top heavy team when we already play: Notre Dame, FSU, Clemson, and Louisville? That would make no sense.

I would much rather play and beat Utah State to make a bowl game, get exposure, get extra practices, and get an extra game, than play USC with the same schedule we have this year and lose 45-0.

It's not just "saying we went to a bowl game", there are very tangible benefits to making a bowl game that helps build a program. To say otherwise would be foolish.

We've got to play probably 3 top 10/15 teams in our division, plus Notre Dame, plus @ Ga. Tech and we'll be walking into the hornet's nest at App. I think our schedule is plenty hard this year. I think playing one FCS team, 2 non-BCS FBS teams, and one BCS team for our out of conference schedule is right for us and that's typically what we've done.

What both of you are admitting without specifically saying....if you want to be honest about it....is that you realize that WF cannot compete in this conference. You can deny that all you wish, but if you feel that 2-6 or 3-5 is the best we can do in the conference and, therefore, must load the non-conference schedule with creampuffs to get to a 6-6 record, that is what you are saying.

I agree with you. And you can forget the clap-trap nonsense about this situation being only temporary while we "build a program". I've heard that talk for the last 60 years. Nobody is ever going to build an ACC-caliber football program at Wake Forest as long as we are trying to compete in this conference. If you think it can be done you are just living in a denial of reality. What Jim Grobe did in 2006-08 was a once-in-a-lifetime miracle. It had never happened in the 50 years of ACC history before then and it will never happen again in the next 50 years of ACC history.

And if anyone wants to out themselves for the "ampipe vs. walnut heights" tag, you will have posrep coming your way.

We won a conference championship 10 years ago, so you can say whatever you want to about it, but that's the reality. I'm sure you think it's "once in a lifetime", but it happened, and the goal is to make it happen again.

If Wake can't cut it in the ACC then neither can any of the other teams in NC can do it since they haven't won titles in 30+ years.

Isn't the game Thur. night on ACC Extra? Can at least watch on the computer

BKF, in case you don't remember, here are some of your direct quotes from the beginning of the football season last year. You really nailed it:

"What I am wondering is who Clawson's ACC win this year will come against...assuming that he can get his one annual ACC win again this year. From the first week's games, my guess would be Virginia. The bigger question is will it be all FGs again or will Clawson's offense break thru and score a touchdown in this win."

"Clawson will probably never have a winning season at WF, but it's not all his fault."

Last season's defense proves that, while it is difficult, WF can compete in the new ACC. Our defense was the product of development and coaching. We did not have the high level recruits that most of our competition had but we were more than competitive defensively. As is usually the case, our problem was depth and skill position talent. With an uptick in recruiting and with excellent coaching, we can narrow the gap.

If the present staff proves to be as good as it seems in spotting undervalued talent and developing that talent into ACC worthy players, we should pay them at an exceptionally high level. It is an exceptionally challenging job.
