CONQUERED! WE DON'T FEAR THE SPEAR!

Clawson has done a great job building the program. He has turned this into a real football team. That should not be discounted as it is the hardest and most important part of coaching.

That said, I don't think Clawson will ever be anything except mindnumbingly conservative on offense. It cost us this game and should have cost us the game at App. I doubt it would help to fire Ruggerio as the OC usually reflects the head coach. Clawson seems like a replica of Grobe.

It's very frustrating to watch as it is evident that the conservative play calls are the low percentage plays as well as unentertaining. Perfect coach for LOWF.

A team is always going to make bad plays. It is tue nature of competition. Coaches are paid millions of dollars to prepare for and make the right play call. We simply didn't and it cost us the game. When you make that kind of money, expect to be called out when you blow a game. If a golfer hits a 9 iron in the water in a clutch moment people understand. If a golfer is tied going into the par 5 18th hole and his caddy hands him a sand wedge because he is scared to give him the driver then that caddy should rightfully be excoriated.

I love Clawson, and I don't want anyone else for our coach, but the staff lost this one. Special teams and playcalling are the result of coaching above all else and they were our two main areas of weakness tonight. Again it is worth repeating. 32 runs for 37 yards and we decide to run a delay to halfback and a qb sneak. Neither of which had done anything all day. We curled up in a corner and just hopede tjing would break their hand on the ropes. You can't knock someone out if you are unwilling to throw a punch.

Agree. He did the same thing at ASU. We ran 3 times and punted, giving them a chance to beat us with a FG. And btw, why wasn't Washington out there trying to block long fgs today?!

Great post. I said it with Grobe and I'll say it with Clawson. I have never and will never understand how a Wake football coaching staff goes conservative with play-calling. It makes absolutely no sense. As coaches, they both inherited one of the shittiest Division I football programs since records have been kept. Yet, both coached and are coaching as if they have the 1967 Green Bay Packers squad. It's just mind boggling why this continues to happen under different coaching regimes.

I'm sorry, but this makes no sense. I completely understand why Grobe was and Clawson is conservative at LOWF...because it kind of works. Clawson is building something pretty solid and Grobe is the best coach we've had and won an ACC title that way. I think I remember Caldwell being aggressive and throwing it all over the place with Rusty and Kuklick...how'd that tenure go?

You remember wrong

The game was there for the taking and we couldn't get it done. Would be nice to see some aggressive playcalling on the most critical offensive series.

Remember when people didn't want John Wolford to be our QB? That's pretty funny to look back on now

The coaching staff lost it narrative is so lame. Are the coaches the reason that we:

Dropped an INT in the red-zone, which would have prevented a FG
Had a safety make a terrible play on the ball on a 3rd down and 20. A stop there would have prevented another FG.
Lost a fumble inside their 25 - probably took points off of the board for us
Threw a pass 5 yards short to a wide open receiver on 3rd down on the key second to last drive. A completion there totally changes the end of the game.
Totally missed on another wide open throw on the last possession
Had a pass bounce right off a WR's shoulder pads leading to an INT in our own territory - again they end up scoring off of it
Totally screwed-up two easily downed punts inside FSU's 2 yard line
Committed a defensive holding penalty to negate a play that would have likely changed the way the last couple of minutes played out (in all fairness it looked like a pretty lame call, as the TE grabbed the Wake player)

Both teams made 10-15 mistakes like that including FSU on the opening kickoff did not need to hold and still would have taken it all the way back.

The point is the game was tied late a field goal would have won it. Claws on needs to be aggressive and try to win the game rather than play-call in such a manner that last week gave Appy State a field goal try to beat us. He has to know that we haven't been running the ball successfully the entire game so running will not work in that situation and throwing in 3rd and long is highly unlikely to be successful either.

As long as as he's getting open and we aren't forcing it, feed him the ball. The others need to step up if they want touches.

Not just running it, but running it laterally. Other than the TD run, which could have easily been called a hold on the puling guard, our RBs hadn't gotten around the edge all game. That 1st down play was doomed from when it was called. Go fucking forward. I would have sort of understood a Colburn run up the middle hoping for a 3+3+4 first down, but to run it laterally was idiotic.

I agree, but note with humor the prior complaints of the peanut gallery that we only run straight ahead and never around the ends. People really don't know what they're talking about.

7 to 10 point dog in this match. We lose by a touchdown. So we didn't get the upset. Get the fuck over it. Great game. We had our chances. And get rid of those fucking helmets.

Yeah the helmets were bad. The only good looking helmet we have is the back with gold WF. The C3PO crap and the cartoon Deacon yesterday are stupid af, especially in a nationally televised game.

I didn't see the whole game, but I don't recall many successful runs between the tackles. Tailbacks had 11 carries for 26 yards. Was Carney hurt?

I think the all-white gold helmet look we had at App St were the best looking Wake unis I've ever seen. Just fantastic.
