Some quick notes and observations that I jotted down from reviewing the stat sheet and watching the TV replay. Apologies if some of this info has already been posted.

Offensive Notes

Exactly two-thirds of the offensive plays were either a Wolford run (or sack) or a handoff or pass target to either Greg Dortch or Matt Colburn.

Wake’s offense ended up almost exactly 50/50 in terms of run/pass mix. I’d like to know if that was the game plan going in. FSU showed a lot of stacked (8-man) boxes and then crept a safety up on several other plays – just daring Wake to try to throw the ball. I’d bet that Wake had planned to run the ball more but had to adjust.

ABC reported that Wolford suffered an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. No details though, and he kept playing.

Defensive Notes

Wake’s 17 tackles for loss is a shocking result. At least for me. I believe that is a school record. I remember posting about how few and far between TFLs were as recently as the 2015 season.

It was a game of extremes. FSU’s 7 longest plays went for a combined total of 232 yards. FSU’s other 57 offensive plays gained a combined 38 net yards (113 gain and 75 loss).

Through the first 3Qs FSU’s QB Blackmon was held to only 31 passing yards. Then he connected on 4Q passes to Gavin (43 yards) and the game-clinching 40 yard TD to pass to Tate.

The most impressive part of the game was how many defensive players rose to the occasion. I thought that Wendell Dunn, Amari Henderson and Grant Dawson probably played the best games of their careers thus far. The performances by Duke Ejiofor, Jessie Bates and Willie Yarbary had to be near the top of their lists of best games. Bates and Ejiofor were sensational (although I’m sure Jessie would have liked to have come down with the INT deep in Wake territory that slipped through his hands).

It was fantastic to hear an ABC commentator talking about how Wake’s DL “was eating up” FSU’s OL.

Tuberville said on the broadcast that Wake looked like they had never worked on defending the screen.

The 3 times that FSU recovered their own fumble ranks high on the list of missed opportunities for Wake.

The ABC commentators agreed that the personal foul call on Bates deep in Wake territory was BS.

Good write up. I'm surprised there has not been more talk about the obvious pass interference on Washington on the last drive. Would have put as the 45 with some time.

So happy you are back, Deac94. This forum greatly missed you.

Jeff Burley was credited with the tackle on the long kickoff return by FSU. Is he back from his torn ACL? Has his shirt been burned? I thought he was out for the year.

That game was the best Defensive Line play I have ever seen from Wake-- every one of our D-linemen played well. If their back broke through the D-line, they often got big yards, but this did not happen often. I thought Wendell Dunn's play was fantastic.

I'd be curious to see stats from downfield passing attempts. I'm not trying to beat a dead horse but it seemed like Wolford was having good success by either completing passes or running. One INT that wasn't his fault and a couple sacks but overall i was impressed by our ability to compete on the perimeter against FSUs purported all-universe D. We really played it close to vest with the read option / Wolford "follow the back" play and i think there was a pretty big opportunity cost.

Wendell Dunn has quietly had himself a heck of a career at Wake Forest. I think he came in as a linebacker and has grown into a very good ACC caliber defensive end.

I recall Wolford getting hit in the back after going down, close but no PF - he looked shaken. Think he hurt his shoulder then, status for this week?
Also, from my taped re-look back home, the PF on roughing the punter was BS. (big play)
Two Wake guys ran together and went under the punters leg, no touch. In fact the punter placed his hand on the Wake player's back/head to complete his somersault flop. The ref calling the foul was view blocked by the coliding Wake players.
Still, great effort by the team, especially defense, and minus our mistakes, we win. Thanks for report '94!

On their next 3 plays, FSU netted like -8 yards, so it didn't really matter much. I agree the penalty was garbage, though.

True, just one part of the game, but I recall the punt was awful and we would have had possession about the FSU 30/35 or so.

Special teams (which looked to be a strength heading into the season) decided it. Missed XP (Weaver almost missed the PAT after that one). Their kicker Aguayo made 4 FGs including a 51 yarder.

Long kickoff return led to a score when FSU's offense was stone-walled. WF pooched a kickoff and FSU still got it up to the 38. Short punts in the 4th quarter. WF wins by 7+ if special teams had been even.

Jesse Bates is great. The DL is great. Wofford, Seringue and Dortch played well. As long as WF doesn't suffer mass injuries, 7, even 8, wins is possible. This WF team is WF's best team since 2006-2008.

I'd love to see it, but I don't. Unless State implodes, we have to beat Syracuse and dook just to get to 6. GT and ND aren't complete world-beaters, but we have to play them on the road. And our offense has, predictably, regressed over the past 2 weeks. This does not strike me as a team that can get to 28 points on a consistent basis, which is what we will need to compete over the next 5 weeks.

agree on the roughing call - total BS call that the ref called without seeing contact. he bought the act.

we also need to control clock, which we are completely 100% incapable of doing

prediction: GT and ND will wear us down, and gash us in the 4th quarter

regarding the short punt at the end of the game, we had lost the game when we went 3 and out; Aguayo's 51-yarder would have been good from 60

Aguayo's rarely miss, in college anyway.

Sig,

You are not taking into account the strength of the FSU defense.

Do you think Bama has a good offense?

FSU's defense held Bama to 269 yards and 24 points (10 of which were scored simply because of fumbled KO return and a fumble deep in FSU territory). FSU defense is really strong. Not sure how you can walk away from that game thinking the offense isn't much improved. WF will have a lot of close games down the stretch; WF will win their share.

There were a number of ref issues. The Gavin reception (not), Cam Serigne targeting reversal, and ghost roughing the punter call.

Could'ves and Should'ves don't mean squat, but we were really close to putting 30+ points up on FSU's defense. We settled for 2 short FG's and fumbled in the redzone. We left a potential 15 points off the board there. FSU's offense was really hurt by losing their QB and their OL isn't that good, but there isn't much wrong with their defense.

We're into week 6 of the season and we still have 100% control of our fate (assuming Clemson beats F$U lol). I'll take it. Granted, we have a lot of work to do, but at lease we have control of it.
