Some quick notes and observations that I jotted down from reviewing the stat sheet and watching the TV replay. Apologies if some of this info has already been posted.
Offensive Notes
Exactly two-thirds of the offensive plays were either a Wolford run (or sack) or a handoff or pass target to either Greg Dortch or Matt Colburn.
Wake’s offense ended up almost exactly 50/50 in terms of run/pass mix. I’d like to know if that was the game plan going in. FSU showed a lot of stacked (8-man) boxes and then crept a safety up on several other plays – just daring Wake to try to throw the ball. I’d bet that Wake had planned to run the ball more but had to adjust.
ABC reported that Wolford suffered an injury to his non-throwing shoulder. No details though, and he kept playing.
Defensive Notes
Wake’s 17 tackles for loss is a shocking result. At least for me. I believe that is a school record. I remember posting about how few and far between TFLs were as recently as the 2015 season.
It was a game of extremes. FSU’s 7 longest plays went for a combined total of 232 yards. FSU’s other 57 offensive plays gained a combined 38 net yards (113 gain and 75 loss).
Through the first 3Qs FSU’s QB Blackmon was held to only 31 passing yards. Then he connected on 4Q passes to Gavin (43 yards) and the game-clinching 40 yard TD to pass to Tate.
The most impressive part of the game was how many defensive players rose to the occasion. I thought that Wendell Dunn, Amari Henderson and Grant Dawson probably played the best games of their careers thus far. The performances by Duke Ejiofor, Jessie Bates and Willie Yarbary had to be near the top of their lists of best games. Bates and Ejiofor were sensational (although I’m sure Jessie would have liked to have come down with the INT deep in Wake territory that slipped through his hands).
It was fantastic to hear an ABC commentator talking about how Wake’s DL “was eating up” FSU’s OL.
Tuberville said on the broadcast that Wake looked like they had never worked on defending the screen.
The 3 times that FSU recovered their own fumble ranks high on the list of missed opportunities for Wake.
The ABC commentators agreed that the personal foul call on Bates deep in Wake territory was BS.
