Clawson Credibile! (will reconsider if he sits Newman for another scrappy gym rat QB)

I've just assumed all along that we're saving all of our "special plays" for Louisville, since we didn't even run them last year after they were foisted upon Louisville's unsuspecting coach, and since presumably that won't happen again this year and cause a distraction for Louisville's student/athletes.

That would be really stupid, given they could have helped us win FSU and/or GT.

I mean, one of Lobo or Grobe thought it was a good idea to run the option with Tanner Price.

I can't let this go. Lobo/Grobe lost all credibility when they tried this stunt during Tanner's senior year - one of the most prolific passers wake has had, and these genius' think they are outsmarting everyone with the option?

I remember being at the Spring Game, 3-0 final, I think - and Grobe hinted that he wanted to hide the offense from BC, the opening game on a Friday night. Went 0-2, with losses to BC and ULM, before they scrapped it, and went back to the standard passing game.

So no, Lobo was not a good oc.

2003 - 27.72 (50)
2004 - 20.91 (93)
2005 - 24.45 (71) With the ACC POY

Not sure if your point.

No point. Just interested. Although I think getting ACC POY is something.

Our offense has looked too good at times this year to look as bad as we often do, especially late in games. It's a philosophy thing. Our offense is really only there to support the defense. We prioritize running clock and limiting turnovers rather than scoring. Grobe was the same way. Our defense is good but not good enough to beat decent ACC teams like this. What's especially frustrating is that we've shown ability to do more on offense. Later in games we get so predictable that we move backwards, giving up field position and putting pressure on the defense and really only burn a few minutes. If we would throw quick slants and other high percentage passes we should still keep the clock rolling and open up the run. Basically play the whole game like we did the first quarter against FSU. And even if we miss a few throws so what? Three and outs after burning all of 2 minutes isn't getting it done either.

We play scared on D too. Giving up third and 21 against FSU in what was basically a prevent alignment and putting no pressure on a freshman QB is inexcusable, and totally WFU predictable. So bag the whole keep it close/limit mistakes/shorten game/bend don't break mentality on both sides of the ball. It doesn't work. And we have "won" too many halves of games playing aggressively for me to think we couldn't win some of these heart-breakers we keep losing.

Amen. The philosophy won in 2006 because the QBs were unbelievably bad in the league that year (Ryan aside, but we did get him while gimpy). Otherwise it hasn't worked and it will continue not to work

Furthermore, who on this board didn't see both the FSU and GT collapses coming? I was at the FSU game and called it at every point. Two early FGs killed us. Giving up third and 21 was still the biggest turn of the game IMO. But it played out exactly as we knew it would. We did everything thing on offense and defense we knew we would. I didn't bother watching GT. There was never a question about that one. Our game plan plays right into the hands of a team like GT. Our method just will not win games against decent teams that don't beat themselves. Maybe sometimes we will be close but we just won't win very often. And I'm not saying our record should be better than it is right now, or that we should consistently be beating FSU or GT or NCSU or whatever. But honestly I think we could win alot more than we do if we played to win. I'd have rather watched us lose to FSU by going for it in the Red Zone instead of kicking a FG and not converting, or throwing a pick on second down late in the game instead of getting smashed at the line of scrimmage and punting for the loss. I mean fuck it. It's not even fun to watch. Picking apart individual playcalling isn't really the point. Even the best OCs in the best programs mess up. It's our overall philosophy. I'm not calling Clawson a coward but we need a new philosophy.

The easiest thing about coaching at Wake is that you are expected to lose. You are at a small school with shitty history and no recruiting advantages that would attract top tier football talent. You can be a legend by being a .500 coach at Wake. So why not coach with an aggressive mentality? If you go for the jugular and it blows up in your face- guess what? You were probably going to lose if you played it conservative.

It was Coach Grobe's biggest weakness and it appears to be a weakness for Coach Clawson as well.

I don't think that there was a change in philosophy or strategy at halftime at all. The team just imploded. We called the same type of plays, ran the same offense. We just sucked, to put it bluntly.

Now, it's appropriate to ask why that was, and why we often come out of halftime looking incompetent. And you might well question the coaches on this. But this team has yet to play 4 full quarters of good football this year. Even in our early wins we didn't have to play hard for four quarters. We know we can hang with the better teams for some period of time, but why can't we sustain any periods of good play in order to win?

If you are talking about GT that could be as I didn't watch it. But FSU we totally changed our offensive game in second half.

As to your second point I can't tell if we aren't motivated to play in the second half or we are just terrible at answering the other team's adjustments.

Although I think we were top 25 rushing offense Lobos first 3 years. Correct me if I'm wrong. Has to do something with Oline coaching, not just Barclay, Andrews. Passing was probably dreadful.

Exactly. Well said.

Additionally disappointing given some of Clawson's bullish talk, particularly when he took the job

One coaching decision I disagree with. We have won the toss the last 3 games and have deferred each time. 1st 3 possesions of opponent 1st half: 13 points. 1st 3 possessions of Wake 2nd half: 0.

I think it just sets the wrong tone.

You have hit the nail on the head. Although, Grobe changed his system to fit the talent of Skinner, Clawson still if inviting our opponents to join us in our backfield. The defense is showing the signs of stress that a inconsistent offense is putting on it.

You play to win the game.

Agreed that our staff(s) don't always exhibit such behavior.

Not sure what game I watched on Saturday.

WF never punted after the 11 minute mark of the 3rd quarter.

WF went for it on 4th down on three consecutive 2nd half possessions (failed to make it on all 3 occasions).

WF should've gone for it even more often on 4th down and should've done so earlier in the game (like on the 4th and 22 from its own 10 yard line)?

For the game, WF punted 3 times and went for it on 4th down 3 times.

Something largely wasted by Lobo. Barclay was talented enough to get POY in any college offense. He'd probably have stuck in the NFL longer in this era as a 3rd down back.
