PC proliferation on college campuses (formerly UNC students...)

glad you agree that it is nonsensical, read it again for the hateful, and while you are at it notice the dishonesty as well

The discomfort some feel at certain American holidays is at the core of the anti-PC movement?

A thoroughly dishonest statement.

sailor, political correctness is about recognizing and respecting others. You mock that. Your core belief is that the freedom to mock and demean others is more important than respecting others. Anti-PC is about silencing dissent that doesn't match your beliefs from your perspective that if you can't mock and demean, you're being oppressed.

Do you side with the Native Americans celebrating Indigenous People's Day or the people who mocked them in favor of Columbus Day?

Political correctness is about controlling speech, and through speech ideas, forcing your views on others, silencing any objections and criticisms, and enforcing often mindless group thinking. As a teacher in higher education, you should be ashamed to be supporting such things. When you support pc, you are betraying your academic calling for free inquiry and the free exchange of ideas.

You need to go back and read and understand John Stuart Mill.

PC is really about not being a dickhead. That’s probably hard for some people.

This. And if you're a dickhead, you think PC is about restricting your dickish speech.

And the crazy thing is if you call them dickheads, they want you to be nice about it.

By calling people who disagree with you dickheads? Good point.

Lol. Thanks for proving my point.

If one of your anti-PC people says to me, "Hey nigger, you will not replace us!" I'm not going to dignify him by treating him like someone who merely disagrees with me.

How is so hard for you to respect someone who is different from you? And how hard is it to understand that such disrespect is not tolerable?

Your dishonesty is profound. No one here said that to you.

You don't understand what "if" means.

It's dishonest to say I said someone here said that to me.

Arguing with someone like sailor is stupid. While profoundly wrong, he has no interest in actually listening to points.

What if someone says something on the line of I don’t think Christopher Columbus was a bad dude, and I’m ok with the holiday. Or calls folks illegal immigrants who are in fact illegal immigrants? I think some anti PC people are saying that they aren’t being dickheads when they aren’t sorry someone else is overly eager to claim victimization. Like the teacher teaching humanities 101 wasn’t being a dick head so what is the appropriate response when someone else is irrationally offended?

First thing might be to try and allow that or even try to understand that someone taking offense may not be irrational? Or that even if the response seems irrational to you, to simply try and understand the offended one(s).

Sure, people can certainly be irrational. And yet, their feelings come from somewhere in a way that makes sense to them. So, I guess I'd just try to understand that as best I can. Doesn't mean we all have to agree about everything.

it's often the politically correct who are insisting not only that only their point of view is correct but also that only their point of view should be heard

Man, you are a fragile little soul. So you are offended for someone speaking as you are trying to endorse, asking for a more PC statement. Current GOP attitude. ‘I want to speak my hate, but if someone speaks against me...ruthless, attack and they are the devil.’

Yeah I agree with this, but anyone can make an argument that any aspect of culture is based in or has racist ties. Then they can use that argument to munipate and control other people’s behaviors. At what point is the line drawn where someone says ok guys that’s a little rediculius, I appreciate your feelings but I’m going to keep this classes curriculum.

God it would suck being you.

you miss the point entirely,

the defenders of pc insist that pc is really about politeness, and then they proceed to call those who disagree with them dickheads and thereby undermine their own argument

So, the solution is for “defenders of pc” to find a more polite way of calling “offenders of pc” dickheads?

Two responses:
1) Y’all tend to act like dickheads, so why not just own it?
2) Isn’t being offended because someone disagrees with you and calls you a “dickhead” kind of a “defender of pc”-esque response? A true opponent of pc should revel in the glory of being referred to as a dickhead based on my understanding of your own argument.

Remember how upset you got when people were being dickheads about your asian heritage? Was your response irrational? How do you think Mexican-Americans with undocumented parents might feel? Or people with Native American heritage on a holiday explicitly celebrating the European that initiated the genocide of their people? Just people being sensitive?
