How much does Duke suck? Less than us apparently...

As I posted during the game, stats show we had zero sacks. Just doesn't cut it given our beliefs in our DL/DE talent. Duke is good, but christ they were 5-6 not 8-3. No reason to be so thoroughly dominated by them.

And they were getting to John. We gave up no sacks to State’s very good D-line, but Duke’s was getting pressure. Did we get orders from the league to help Duke get bowl eligible?

Meh. This was a very winnable game. Disappointed in players and coaches. Really inexcusable. We had a chance at eight wins. Pretty sorry across the board. This was the worst loss of the season.

"The loss snapped a two-game win streak for Wake Forest (7-5, 4-4), which could have closed a regular season with three straight wins for the first time since 1967."

:rulz:
I know these are teenagers, but this is why Wake should never ever need extra motivation. We are hardly ever good. If any ring is in sight it must be clasped. Oh well. 8 win season still possible which is phenomenal.

How much does Duke suck? Find out @ Groves, 12:30 Saturday

That was definitely head-scratching. We’ve been blocking really well for weeks, nobody had laid a finger on Wolford, and all of a sudden we can’t handle Duke?? I watched them get drilled by Army two weeks ago. Mystifying.

I think they just wanted to try something different. John wasn’t on his game today and got banged up earlier. I just wish they hadn’t ran the same play 7 times. We got them on the first couple of keepers, after that would’ve been the time to let Kendal throw it deep, which he is good at.

I think Newman may push Hinton a little bit for the starting job next year.

Push Hinton a LOT.

Duke was playing for their season today and obviously did well. Not taking anything away from them. But the staff has to know that effort is coming and be ready to mix it up and make adjustments.

It seems like the Thanksgiving weekend date is cursed for us. I honestly can't remember the last time we won a regular season finale. Guessing it's when we beat Vandy a couple of years in a row under Grobe. Then of course they hired Franklin and paid those losses back with some serious ass-whippings.

Today's loss sucks all the more because Duke could realistically beat us by 60 in basketball this year. Sadly, just a very typical Wake Forest result.

What I think I saw was us getting out schemed badly. Three down lineman and 2 rugged fast linebackers blitzing downhill almost every play. We had no answer and on our side do not have that level of talent at linebacker unfortunately so it’s not like we can practice against that. Put a ton of pressure on their CB and it worked.

We beat Vandy last weekend late in Grobe's career.

2010 at Vandy was our last win in the last game of the regular season. Franklin was hired as their coach after that game.

As Clawson alluded postgame, you could see this letdown coming. Two big, emotional wins over Syracuse and State, followed by this home finale against 5-6 Duke. Team just couldn't maintain the energy three weeks in a row. Hell, Notre Dame couldn't keep it going against Miami. And Miami couldn't keep it going against Pitt.

Disappointed that Clawson put this out there in post-game as an excuse. That’s part of what he and his staff get paid to do; avoid the letdown and keep the squad motivated (not to mention scheme appropriately).
The big enchilada was there to be had and we totally gagged on it. They were not ready and that is mostly on the shoulders of the coaching staff.

It’s probably been mentioned but

Maggio and Weaver were awesome today. Maggio averaged 52. Monster game. With great hang time save 1 punt. Duke started 5 drives inside 20 and 2 inside 10 because of Maggio. We got the ball on offense 1 drive at the duke 30. (And only got a FG) after Maggio swapped a net 74 yard punt with a net 25 yard punt. That’s as good as a turnover.

Weaver 3/3 with 2 40+ yarders. The fact we even had a shot in this game was the massive field position advantage and a senior kicker scoring 11 points. Our O and D were outmatched, but thanks to these 2, it was a game.

I disagree. I hated Clawson’s coaching at the end of the ASU, NCSU, and FSU games ( we were very lucky to win 2 of those) but we have had trouble with tight coverage all year. This loss was no big surprise.

Yeah. They stopped the bleeding on multiple occasions.

Agree 100%

I would ask you to watch and compare the offense’s performance against a superior NCSU defense last week with today’s performance. 180 degree difference in tempo, energy, run game effectiveness, etc. We were not well prepared and got totally shut down the 2nd half today. You and I see things differently (and I respect that “22”).

NC state has actually given up more yards per game than Duke.
