Omnibus Bowl Projections Thread - Belk Bowl

We could use a Big Ten team winding up in the Orange Bowl as that opens up a spot for the ACC (or really Notre Dane) in the Citrus Bowl. Can’t be the Big Ten champ so maybe smoothest path to that would be Ohio State besting Wisky. Auburn and bama both to the playoff, Wisky slides into the OB.

But who knows, VT made the Belk last year and State has played in the venue twice in the last two years. Maybe we’d still get the Belk and those guys would go elsewhere

Another thing that would really help us is if the Pinstripe takes someone other than BC. Could def see that happening with the likes of State/Loui/VT conceivably out there.

After that we are probably on at worst equal footing against BC, Uva and Duke (though likely not FSU, depending on the Bowl)

Wake has travelled very well to our last 5 bowl games, and we'll let the more desirable bowls know that early and often.

I updated my own bowl projections for the ACC and SEC. Both have become really difficult to project. But here goes:

ACC Bowl Projections

CFP – Clemson
Orange – Miami
Camping World – Notre Dame

Tier 1 Bowls (4 teams): Louisville, NCSU and VT would be locks. Slotting them in specific bowls seems futile at the moment. The fourth team is the big question. It would presumably be either FSU (in the Taxslayer/Gator), Wake (in the Belk), or Boston College (in the Pinstripe). Of these three, I’d guess that BC in the Pinstripe would be the least likely. Key to this decision could be the Belk Bowl’s interest in taking one of the three teams that have played there in the last three years. VT in 2016 is probably a non-starter. But what about NCSU (2015) or Louisville (2014)?

Military – UVA. A really great fit from a proximity standpoint. I’m assuming this is a lock.

That would leave BC, Duke and either FSU or Wake (whichever doesn't make a Tier 1 Bowl) to fill the Independence and Quick Lane Bowls. I'm guessing that BC won't go back to the Quick Lane Bowl for a second straight year. It also means that the ACC will send a rep to either Birmingham or St. Pete.

Independence - FSU or Wake. Could BC also be a possibility here?

Quick Lane - Duke

St. Pete or Birmingham - Boston College

SEC Bowl Projections

CFP and NY6 - Alabama, Auburn and Georgia
Citrus - LSU
Outback – Mississippi St
Taxslayer (Gator) – South Carolina
Music City – Kentucky
Texas - Mizzou
Belk – Texas A&M
Liberty – no SEC rep

I continue to think there is a chance that the Belk Bowl ends up without an SEC team. But the chances of that still seem low.

Basically, everything that could go wrong for Wake's bowl hopes went wrong this week. The B1G will get at least 2 of OSU, Wisconsin, and PSU in NY6, possibly all 3. Need to be rooting for OSU next weekend to open up a spot in the Citrus.

If there is one thing I learned this bowl season, it’s that the ACC needs to dump the Shreveport bowl. There are way too many bowls to have to deal with that craptastic situation.

We have no one to blame but ourselves. We are not 2 games better than Duke , F$U or BC. loserville and NCSmoo have surpassed us. It's as if the players were doing what we were doing, planning our trips.

Note that the SEC won't fill it's spot in the Independence Bowl. If I understand correctly, the Independence Bowl is contractually obligated to take a C-USA team to fill the SEC spot. Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss have been mentioned as possibilities.

The PAC-12 has an excess of bowl eligible teams. Two of UCLA, Oregon and Utah will get shut out of the PAC-12's bowl tie-ins and will need to find a spot someone else. The Independence Bowl has been mentioned repeatedly, but that seems to conflict with the I-Bowl's commitment to C-USA.

Only updated projections I’ve seen so far this morning are from SBNation, which has us in Shreveport against Southern Miss.

The Boston Herald thinks that NC State will get the short straw. Their predictions (note: I’m not sure why they think the ACC gets a spot in the Citrus, I thought that was looking less likely after last night):

CFP - Clemson / Miami winner
Orange – Clemson / Miami loser
Citrus – Virginia Tech
Camping World - Notre Dame (presumably – they don’t say specifically)
Taxslayer – FSU
Sun – Louisville
Belk – Wake Forest
Pinstripe – Boston College
Military – Virginia
Independence – NC State
Quick Lane - Duke

I hope they are correct!

Like the Boston Herald, SBNation also projects an ACC team in the Citrus. But then SBNation puts both BC and FSU in the Tier 1 Bowls (ahead of Wake). Here are their predictions:

CFP - Clemson
Orange – Miami
Citrus – Notre Dame
Camping World – Virginia Tech
Taxslayer – FSU
Sun – Louisville
Belk – NC State
Pinstripe – Boston College
Military – Virginia
Independence – Wake Forest
Quick Lane – Duke

With an ACC/ND team headed for the Citrus in their scenario, the ACC does not send a rep to either Birmingham or St. Pete.

I was worried that even with a win yesterday Wake would still get picked over and end up in a shitty bowl location and matchup. At least now the shitty bowl has been earned.

The Big Ten will also likely not fill their spot at the Quick Lane Bowl. It's not 100% certain though, as the Big Ten's bowl agreements are as complicated as the other conferences. But highly likely that the ACC's opponent with come from the MAC.

So the three most likely scenarios for Wake:

Belk Bowl versus SEC (most likely either Texas A&M or Mississippi State)

Independence Bowl versus C-USA (possibly Southern Miss or Louisiana Tech - assuming that the I-Bowl can't take a PAC-12 team over C-USA)

Quick Lane Bowl versus MAC

Both ESPN predictions keep Wake in the Belk Bowl.

ESPN – Bonagura (no Citrus Team, BC and FSU get the short straws)

CFP – Clemson
Orange - Miami
Citrus – neither NC or ACC gets a spot
Camping World – Notre Dame
Taxslayer – Virginia Tech
Sun - Louisville
Belk – Wake Forest
Pinstripe – NC State
Military - Virginia
Independence – Florida State
Quick Lane – Boston College (note: this would be the second consecutive year)
St. Pete - Duke

ESPN – Hale (ND to the Citrus, Boston College gets the short straw)

CFP – Clemson
Orange - Miami
Citrus – Notre Dame
Camping World – Virginia Tech
Taxslayer – NC State
Sun - FSU
Belk – Wake Forest
Pinstripe – Louisville
Military - Virginia
Independence – Boston College
Quick Lane – Duke

Hale is also predicting that the Belk Bowl will not get an SEC rep this year.
