My Top 25 Albums of 2017

8. The National - Sleep Well Beast

I've listened to this one a few times already and it never really pulled me in the way their previous three did.

Yeah, when this one ended and Spotify started playing Trouble will find me, I instantly like it better.

7. The War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding

More Philly stuff. One man band.

I hadn't listened to this one but was hoping to see a cover of "The War On Drugs/Suck My Cock." No such luck.

Nearly every song is in excess of six minutes, which really just kind of signals that they all follow the same basic formula with layered instrumentals that extend a little longer than most rock songs.

Pretty sure "Pain" follows the same chord progression of some Coldplay song.

Reminiscent of some of Wilco's better albums, but not as good.

Some of these songs are way too dreamy.

Sounds like he's mimicking bob Dylan on "You Don't Have To."

Remarkable how subdued everything is this year. Need to throw in Japandroids.

6. Grizzly Bear - Painted Ruins

This will not go down as their best album.

If I were in this band I would quit and go play rock n' roll.

Hard to believe they went five years between albums and sound exactly the same.

Taylor Swift album is good.

Katy Perry had an album this year that was utter nonsense.

Is that you're Top 3 ?

I'll put together a real list sometime, but BTG will probably be on it.

ETA: Some records that I would include in a top-25:

Valerie June (The Order of Time)
Kamasi Washington (Harmony of Difference)
Tyler the Creator (Flower Boy)
Big Thief (Capacity)
Ryan Adams (Prisoner)
Jamila Woods (HEAVN)
SZA (ctrl)
Miguel (War & Leisure)
LA Witch (S/T)
Cousin Stizz (One Night Only)
Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile (Lotta Sea Lice)

[I really like the Kelala and Kehlani records, too, but I don't think they would make a top-25. They're great R&B/Pop records, though.]

5. Spoon - Hot Thoughts

I've always looked at Spoon as overhyped pretenders and they've generally stayed outside of my listening purview, but this is a good album. Well produced with good musicianship.

4. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - The French Press

Just six songs with a 25 minute running time, so more an EP than an LP. It's got that jangling sound that I really like.

Gin Blossoms ?

3. Vince Staples - Big Fish Theory

This album is all over the place. Not sure how much I enjoy the electropop rap combo. Kanye didn't figure it out and Vince hasn't either really. Most of these songs seem to devolve into chaos at some point.

Incomprehensible disjointed noise is a popular genre but it's not like he's revolutionized it.

No way I could get my wife to listen to this. She'd leave the house. If we were in the car she'd turn off the stereo or throw herself on the pavement.

A song might start out with a lot of promise, but then it either doesn't go anywhere and you wind up listening to the same thing for three minutes OR it goes in an unenjoyable direction. party people is a good example of this. The vocals become a little more urgent and rapid, but the song just doesn't move forward, then ends with 40 seconds of dance and drum beats.

NPR lists BagBak as the #18 best song of 2017. I dunno. Good job telling everybody to suck a dick though.

2. LCD Soundsystem - american dream

Hey, it's music ! Majesty with melody. You can dance, sing along, feel uplifted. LCDS is, as usual, the best thing going.

No idea how Murphy doesn't destroy his voice.

Yeah, I really think Townie underrated Lorde's album, especially relative to some of the stuff he included.

Priests havent gotten nearly enough love in this thread, I know the album came out a while ago but it's fucking awesome. I probably played it more often then anything else this year.
