'17 Specials & '18 Midterms Thread

Corey Stewart, the 2018 front-runner for VA GOP Senate nomination to take on Tim Kaine.

Holy shit. Has anyone watched last night's Vice News segment?

He's right though.

So many board conservatives are birthers? I don't remember there being any who would publicly admit it.

Well it's timely because there's a senate election tomorrow.

The whole reason Republicans support voter ID laws is so they can weaponize government to make it harder for Democrats to vote.

I don't know if he's the favorite. There are 2 others vying for it, and maybe more over time. Stewart has the biggest name, but he's an obvious Trump red meat kind of guy. That normally doesn't play well in VA, and I think the only reason he came close to Gillispie in the primary was because of an unusually tiny turnout for the Pub primary. Governor was the only important thing Pubs had in their primary, and Gillispie was supposed to win easily, so a lot of his voters stayed home. I guarantee you Kaine would love for Stewart to be the Pub nominee. A nondescript guy with an R next to his name would have a better shot.

Does the opening predict a wave?

Updated for the latest FEC filings:

Record numbers of Democrats continue to emerge who are willing to defy the normal odds by mounting early challenges to sitting House incumbents. As of June 30, we counted 209 Democratic challengers who had raised $5,000 or more. Three months later, the 209 had grown to 391 Democratic challengers with at least $5,000. Of these 391, 210 raised at least $50,000 and 145 raised at least $100,000. The following table shows the comparison across years with the columns showing the number of challengers who have raised at least the amount indicated. (A full set of data, including for each of the candidates, is available on the Campaign Finance Institute’s website.)

Pretty sure that happened, then the state got sued and then they reopened many of them for at least one week per month, or something like that.

Not sure this makes much difference (don't know much about Georgia politics) but Republicans have lost their supermajority in the GA state senate. http://thehill.com/homenews/state-watch/363501-georgia-gop-loses-state-senate-supermajority. May make it harder for them to pass really crazy things, but the GA legislature has been more restrained than, say, the NC legislature lately anyway.

Interesting.
https://ballotpedia.org/Georgia_State_Senate_District_6

Democrats got 49.2% of the initial election vote between 3 candidates. Republicans split the rest between 5 candidates.

Imagine if Democrats had gotten behind a second Democrat besides Jon Ossoff in GA-6 instead of just going for 50%. Democrats got 48.7% in the initial round of that election.

The Senate is now definitely in play in 2018. If Democrats can hold onto their seats, they’d only need to win Arizona and Nevada, where they are at least slight favorites at this point, in order to take control.

I forget. Is she the 1 who was going to be the place sitter, or does she have long term aspirations at this level?
