Danny Manning Credibility Watch

I just read the first sentence above and then stopped. Anyone willing to give Manning one more year is out of touch. It will be forgettable and will have a downstream impact worse than just giving him the boot in two weeks. Time to move on.

The main argument against Manning’s hire (an accurate one) is that he had no business getting a job at what was once a top 25 program based on his experience level. It wasn’t fair to call it a gamble since Wellman probably couldn’t have done any better given the position he put himself in. Even during last year’s success many posters accurately pointed out that even if Manning turned out to be the guy, Wellman shouldn’t get credit for what essentially amounts winning a bad hand on the river.

Why does anyone trust Wellman to make a better or safer hire this time around. And what coach worthy of a top 25 program is going to come play for the AD that fires a well respected coach on the eve of an influx of talent for the second time this decade?

If I thought there was even a plausible chance that the next Tony Bennett was walking through that door I’d say go for it. I’m not. If Manning sucks as bad as y’all think he does then let him prove it with the most experienced and talented team (that he built from scratch) we will have had this decade.

And can we please stop with the “Is John Collins really a replicable model” nonsense. Of course it’s replicable. In fact it’s the only model that has ever worked at Wake Forest. Since the ACC was founded Wake has been to exactly 1 NCAA tournament without a future first round pick on the roster (1982 team with future later round picks Danny Young, Anthony Teachey, and Delaney Rudd).

We have our third (?) 5 star recruit in at least the last 20 years coming next year. I’m pretty sure Manning can manage to produce another top 20 pick.

If Hoard becomes a top 20 pick and leads our team to great success that still isn’t the pattern Collins followed. Counting on players ranked outside of the top 150 to become lottery quality players is not a sound model. It isn’t one Manning is following either, but it does make it harder to evaluate that year, especially when it is sandwiched by two very disappointing seasons.

The year that no one wants to talk about is 2015-16. We replaced Madison Jones, Aaron Rountree, and Darius Leonard with John Collins, Bryant Crawford, and Doral Moore. We won two fewer games, finished two spots worse in the ACC, and went from 120 to 118 in Kenpom. A disastrous year.

That seems impossible to do, even for Danny Manning.

Our fringe 5-star has played like a high-end 3-star this year, so yeah, I have no clue how much to expect from Hoard next year.

I am in favor of giving Manning one more season, mainly because there is no Kevin Keatts type candidate out there that checks all of my boxes (successful turnaround + sustained success as a head coach, success as a mid-major head coach, and elite recruiting experience as an assistant). Earl Grant is the closest, but it’s going to take another year to convince me of sustained success (+ he doesn’t have those blue blood recruiting ties)..

TBF Grant's last three years are not far off at all on Keatts' three years at UNCW. Only real thing missing is the tourney appearance.

And Marshall a pretty darn good influence to have learned from

2015-2016. Still can't get over adding that much talent and losing dead wood and getting worse.

Why would we expect that adding Hoard will fix whatever is broken in Manning's coaching?

And something is broken.

Really hate to say it, such a poorly coached game. No control, bad teaching, no adjustments, lack of any ability to use time outs to help his team. Have watched in horror all year long hoping that I was wrong. He needs help or he needs to exit, and if he won't take help he needs to exit.

After four years, Manning only has three more wins than [Name Redacted]. A change needs to be made. We need some emotion on the sideline!

Manning is a shitty coach. No results on the court, he gets no ******* results. I see regression more than progress. Even 1 more day with him at the helm is a wasted day for Wake Forest Basketball. Billboards, harass Wellman, whatever has to be done, this guy is a POS head coach. Go run a big man camp somewhere and stay away from Winston Salem!!

Truth.

wellman has to go
his last two hires are 105-148 over last 8 seasons.

he shouldn't come within 589431869843968143 miles of the next hire
