Danny Manning Credibility Watch

Danny didn’t make it to the first round. He lost the play in with an NBA first rounder on the team. Every team I have watched today has a better coach than Manning. He needs to go

I don't disagree with your main points but it's an over-simplification to say that we didn't make the first round last year. If we had won the play-in game, the seeding would have been higher than the 13th seed that UNCG had this year. Is it better to be a low or mid-major conference champ with a low seed than a Power 5 team on the bubble? Seems at least debatable to me.

No big deal, Danny's Rhode Island team is really active on the boards and on defense. They are a pleasure to watch and they went far in the tourney last year. Don't like bashing Manning but his team does not compete like Rhode Island or UNC G- no question on that. Not sure why we continue to settle for mediocrity

More like suckitude at 11-20 in Year 4.

I think he was just saying we didn't make the first round. We didn't. Not sure the point of comparing wake to mid major. We're not. I would say it is better for us to make the tournament than not make it.

NBA players produced, NCAAT appearances, recruiting, overall talent, 4,3,2, and 1 year averages of any rating system that accounts for strength of schedule and margin of victory.

NCAA Tournament appearances...are we in this year and I juts missed it. Your post makes us look like a top 35 team thats poised for a run at the elite 8 next year. Smoke um if you got em

RChil is right with his statements but they need to be viewed in a proper context.

Manning has definitely improved WF's team in numerous areas (see RChil's post). However, it is improvement from one of the worst ACC coaches of all time so you'd hope any coach would improve from the awful metrics. And as WF's record & team this year shows, WF still has a long way to go in terms of consistent competitiveness, a rotation of 6-7 guys with ACC talent, annual post-season play, etc...

I don't think Manning is the answer for WF by any means and the above statement does not mean I've changed that stance but WF has improved in areas from the last staff. The improved talent is part of the reason I have strong reservations with Manning due to the similar records with the last staff.

I thought that context was obvious.

As to your last sentence, I agree we have a long way to go as far as consistency, but I think we hit all of those benchmarks next year. Will take at least two more seasons of that before we can say we are doing that “consistently” though. Manning will need to retain the talent he has and bring in more in 2019/2020.

We'll see. I hope he does well but I don't have much faith right now.

RC - When the writers get together later this year for ACC press day they vote on a preseason ACC standings. What do you believe Wake Forest will be ranked?

In addition to RC I'm interested to know what everyone else thinks...I say we'll be 11.

Double digits for sure. I’d have to take a closer look at everyone’s rosters to say more than that.

Clawson took an equally bottom-of-the-barrel situation and turned us into a top 30 team (according to the Kenpom equivalent for CFB) in his fourth year this year, in a hard-as-hell conference, in a sport where guys way less often step right in and make a big impact, in a sport with way less roster turnover year-to-year, with a way bigger roster and with way more disadvantages than our CBB program faces.

Yet Manning was in a truly impossible situation and excuses continue to need to be made for him

Manning did this in his 3rd year.

Top 30 would be very kind. Clawson also never had the best player in the conference, unlike DM who did, in a sport where having the best player is huge.

And talk to me when Wake goes 4-8 in football this year. Will not happen

36th isn’t that far off. Especially given there are more teams in college basketball.

Maybe Clawson should go recruit and develop the best player in the conference. Manning should too, since he hasn’t had that either.

And I’d argue that having the best player in the conference at the most important position is pretty helpful
