BBall Recruiting Thread 2k19 - Charles Coleman de-commits to Wake. :(

Offer from AR, Baylor, OK State, Creighton and TN.

Anyone have any idea when those offers occurred and if any were actually still on the table? Or were they all contingent on other players not accepting?

Well, like, duh.

Of course not. Nor do I see him contributing major minutes in year 2, 3, or 4. Or year 5. So why the hell would you redshirt him? He's Manning's Rondale (393 ranked desperation commit). We're getting stuck with him as Manning is likely on his way out. Why would you commit to giving him five years?

No one is committing to 5 years anymore than any player is committed to get 4 years. Guy could transfer after year 2. All this does is give him an extra year of development time. If he ends up being good in his latter years, you have him for four years if he sticks around. Years 4 and 5 of this guy are likely better than his year 1.

This isn't a difficult concept.

Apparently it is.

There is zero reason to bring this guy in unless you anticipate needing him to play spot minutes right away (which we do).

Whether he plays the 5 years or not, it affects your recruiting because you can't point to an open spot. You're arguing for reserving a spot on the recruiting chart for 5 years for a 338th ranked player in hopes that he develops into a better contributor than someone we could recruit over the next 5 seasons, while admitting that he's almost definitely going to transfer out anyway. There is no upside. What kind of development do you think he's going to get this coming season if he's being red shirted?

That's where we disagree. He ain't EJ Montgomery. If we had someone who was very good to fill in, he might contribute. This guy is a project. Projects require experience and time. Moore, Sarr will get the vast majority of minutes at the 5.

Anyway, I've spent enough time on this subject for the day. If a decision is made to redshirt him, we can debate it then. I just don't think it's a crazy suggestion.

My time is more valuable than this.

You're always recruiting. No one is pointing to open spots anymore because you never know.

A redshirt technically only affects your recruiting, if at all, in year 5.

Redshirting players doesn’t really hurt you, it just rarely makes sense outside of injury.

The only reason to bring this guy in is because you hope he’s good enough to stop the bleeding if Moore and Sarr are both in foul trouble and as a pretty shitty insurance policy in case you can’t land someone better in 2019 (which would be a sign of much bigger problems).

If you don’t intend to play him at all this year (even if it’s just 3 minutes every other game), then you are certainly better off waiting and signing someone in 2019. I am a strong believer in Manning’s ability to develop big men, but if he can’t find two 2019 bigs better than this guy will be after a redshirt year then he’s fucked regardless.

We absolutely need a big for 2019 when Moore leaves. Getting a project for 2018 allows for a year in weight room/conditioning/development and gives Doral someone to compete against in practice. Otherwise, we would depend on 2019 frosh big man but its rare to find a big man ready to compete in ACC from get go. Could go grad transfer route in 2019 but that is a crap shoot as we know. I see zero downside here give open scholarships.

Whom do we have a legit shot at in 2019? Key word being legit. Not the Wendell Moores.

Manning adds a grad transfer shooter and there is no reason we shouldnt win 20 games next year.

Would be nice to get not only a grad-transfer shooting specialist (a la Arians), but also a sophomore transfer with some upside, who can be ready to go in 2019-20, especially if it's a versatile type guard with some size and range to help Chill, Sharone and Lewis \ whomever in the back court. At least as a hedge against not getting a stud PG in the 2019 class. And if Lewis doesn't pan out, not to worry as much.
