BBall Recruiting Thread 2k19 - Charles Coleman de-commits to Wake. :(

Maybe Lorng is willing to redshirt his first year, like VA does successfully with some of their big guys. Become a diligent student in the Ryan Horn S&C school. Work against Doral, Sarr, Hoard, Sunday in practice. Be a contributor at C after Doral graduates.

ETA: Boris Diaw is one of his favorite NBA players. Maybe he can become a semblance of Boris 2.0.

Pretty sure he is already a post grad. He will either be able to compete as a freshman/soph or likely never will.

Not necessarily true. This guy has "may contribute by his junior season" written all over him. Many big guys mature later. This one hasn't played many (only 4 so far) years of organized (or any kind of) basketball. Not your usual HS super-senior who has already played 10 plus years at multiple levels. Let one of the years he isn't ready to contribute be a red shirt year so he can contribute for an extra year at the end of his college career.

...for someone else, like most college basketball players in their 5th year

Why the hell would you want to red shirt a project and extend how long he takes up a scholarship?

We need immediate help. If he can't provide it then he likely will be a future transfer.

It's weird how this board is all over Shelton Mitchell now being amazing for Clemson but we act like Childress at point for Wake is some kind of disaster.

ACC per 40's for these guys? 12.3 points vs 12.9 points. 2.9 turnovers vs 2.7. 3.6 assists vs. 5.4 assists. Field goal percentage 35% vs 38%. 3 point percentage 38% vs 39%. Steals 1.4 vs 0.7.

Chill is a very solid 2 year backup and 2 year starter type player even for a good, tournament-bound program.

Great logic Racer. We should redshirt the guys that can produce immediately.
That's not at all what I said. Let me make it clearer for you: why would you red shirt a bench filler, taking up 5 years of scholarship, when given any reasonable expectation for the program, you should be able to recruit a better player later?

You don't recruit a nobody in basketball and red shirt him with hope that he contributes 5 years later.

I give RChill a hard time, but I'm even embarrassed for him that two other big Manninginners have this hot take.

Yeah, Racer's right about this. We can find another 6'10" project at five months before his freshman year starts every year. No need to redshirt.

This.

I understand treating scholarships like 10 day contracts offends some people’s sensibilities but that’s college basketball now.

Our program just isn't healthy enough right now to be doing developmental redshirts.

Lorng is a somewhat unusual case. He has not been playing basketball since he was taller than the ball. He is relatively new to the game. He still has a lot to learn. He has some things you can't teach: Height and soft hands, according to the limited info on him. Those are some arguments that his upside potential is greater than that of the usual suspect rated around 300. And that more development time might produce greater results.

You can’t teach height but there is no shortage of 6-10 kids in the hoops landscape.

The recruiting cycle doesn't lend itself to taking players that will likely transfer. Everyone has been picked over by the time it is announced. Kind of like what we are seeing now with 2018....

If he's a really good player 4 years from now after red-shirting for a year and then playing 3 years in college, he won't be coming back for that 5th year
