High Point U commits to basketball

Yeah, keep to lawyering. You'd think someone with 150 LLC's would understand something about cost of capital.

So CoreDeac has labeled anyone who contributes financially to Wake a sucker, idiot, moron, etc. yet he has at least one kid at HPU?

Too good... this thread has definitely delivered

It definitely matters if HPU attempts to tap the debt markets again for capital unless they have no issue paying an astronomical interest rate.

They don't seem to have much of an issue with anything. I'm not saying the bubble won't burst on their fun one day. But as for 2018, they are rolling in it. The school is a resort. The students are getting better and better every year. And they are lined up to pay 75K/year to come to school there.

Whether the plan plays itself out in a horrible way one day will be determined. I'm not sure it could be worse there than it was 10 years ago but we shall see.

LOL if you think Jeff Capel at Pitt will sniff anything close to a Sweet 16. That program (and IMO that hire) are a disaster.

I don’t think it would be that crazy if Capel made a Sweet 16 at Pitt. He can recruit and is going to be in a better geographic location to recruit than he was at Oklahoma. Pitt’s a dumpster fire right now, but it’s still a program that up until 2017 has made the NCAAT 13 out of the 14 previous years.

With that being said, I think Capel is just as likely to get Pitt sanctioned by the NCAA as he is to have non-vacated success, so it’ll depend on how things break for them.

Please keep in mind that at least some of us have close relations that went to HPU and don’t appreciate all the cheap shots.

Tubby is still getting paid by Memphis even after taking the HPU job, so Nido isn't on the hook for the first couple of years on his contract. Nido claimed they are paying for the Hotel/Conference center/basketball arena with cash.

If things are different than they are being portrayed on here about HP, then please enlighten us.

So calling out anyone or anything related to Wake is perfectly acceptable (and even encouraged) on this board yet any criticism of HPU is off limits?

Is this correct?

I don't really understand this thread.

Tubby Smith has obvious ties to High Point, but he's really fucking old so not sure how that can be used in support of DR's strategy for basketball success. He hasn't been clamoring for that job, and only took it because no high-majors are going to give him a look at this point.

Now, as for Kelsey, imagine that Wake hired him in 2014, and he was fairly successful here. If Xavier comes open he's leaving Wake. Same with Wes and UNC.

Ryan Odom's connection is especially tenuous. He lived in Winston Salem for three years when he was a toddler and for his last three years of high school.

Listen I have two degrees from Wake and my wife has one but the Corporal still wants to fight the last war.

Hahahaha. Have you heard some of the shit that has been said about the state schools on this board?

Looks like to me a spike in interest rates or a net loss of roughly 200 tuition payers would put HPU in default. Not saying their revolutionary view of how to finance an academic institution isn't good but I'd be a little worried as hundreds of colleges in this country are already on a financial precipice. And as far as limiting criticizing them....fuck that. No difference in the other schools we pick on from UNC to Illinois to UNCC to Duke.

Also, Chris Mack is about as connected to Xavier as possible, and he still left for a better job.

Furthermore, a lot of the guys who really elevated programs and then stuck around for a long time had no connection to them prior to becoming head coach: Coach K, Bobby Knight, Jim Calhoun, John Thompson, Lou Henson, Lute Olsen. The only counter-example I came up with was Boeheim, who played and assisted at Syracuse.

The top jobs in the country are:

Kentucky, UNC, Duke, Kansas, UCLA, Indiana and Louisville

Of course anyone leaves for those jobs.

Wake is not a top 10 job, probably never has been. That being said, there is no reason it can't be a top 25 job in cbb. Right now its probably around #55, so we need to climb up.

I wonder if the $4M is just his salary. If not he could make a few million more.

I agree, those are destination jobs that every one wants. Most of those schools have been investigated and put on probation, but it doesn't stop them from being some of the best basketball jobs in America.
