Remember when the trope was that Mourinho was abolishing Uniteds tradition of playing youth?

Minutes given to academy graduates in the league this season:

City: 106
United: 6,220
Spurs: 4,041
Liverpool: 1,582

City still played plenty of young players, even if they weren't academy graduates.

I'm sure that laporte, stones, Silva, and Sane played that's a real comfort to the likes of Diaz and Foden

Especially since the league was locked up with 5 matches to go.

McTominay alone played 6x as much as any MCFC homegrown talent.

As a west ham "academy of football" guy, your response surprised me

I wasn't defending city's practices as much as pushing back against your clearly biased statistic: you mentioned youth in your claim then gave stats for academy graduates and are now talking about "homegrown" talent. Plus, Sane was a locked on starter all season and Bernardo was one of the first off the bench. Rashford was clearly afforded similar playing time, but was anyone else? It seems a misleading stat.

Not playing youth seems to be a problem across England's clubs. West Ham only played Declan Rice the second half of the season because of injuries and lack of depth. Fernandes looked like he was going to play a lot under Bilic before he was hurt for most of the season.

They were probably just resting guys for the Champions League semifinals and finals.

Great stat, dv7, but no one would ever accuse United of being a club made up primarily of homegrown players. Then again, as long as you have more than City, I guess it's OK?

Curious which players made up the bulk of these minutes. Am I missing anyone?

City: Foden
United: McTominay and Rashford
Spurs: Kane and Winks
Liverpool: Alexander-Arnold

BTW, where did you find these stats?

Spurs played Walker-Peters for a few matches as well.

I assume those numbers for United include Pogba?

Perhaps but the point DV7 raised was about Mourinho playing youth and it's not exactly brave of Mourinho to play Pogba.

It's been five seasons since Man United won the league. But do go on about Pogba (transfer?), Lingard (25) and Rashford (unhappy).

Forgot Lingard.

I think it's a good point to note that Mourinho has shown a lot of faith in youth products Lingard and (to a lesser extent) Rashford. He's also done a good job integrating McTominay into the team. I don't think anyone can reasonably credit Mourinho for Pogba's emergence as a youth product.

If anything, I thought Lingaard and Rashford deserved more minutes. But, they finished 2nd, so obviously something was clicking.

Lingard is 25. So is Pogba. I don't think that qualifies as a bold play of youth by any manager. By that age a player supposed to be a productive. So the whole argument he is trying to make is just diluted.

Fulham-Villa playoff final. Feels like 2006.

Will BTB or numberz get to revive their ded fanhood? FINDOUTNEXTSATURDAY!!!

My point is that the league was done and dusted in February, if not January, and mathematically over in April.

Yet, Pep STILL didn't give his youth players a chance to gain valuable Premier League minutes despite ALL THAT. That is horrible, especially considering the clear talent he has at City in their youth ranks. But Pep doesn't give a fuck about developing the clubs youth, he wanted that 100 point total. So good for him?

If Mourinho did that to a future English star like Foden the English press would have had a damn collective aneurysm.

The bulk of United's minutes were Pogba, Lingard and Rashford. Foden, fwiw, is the youngest player to play any minutes for an EPL winner.

Again, McTominay alone played 6x as many minutes as ALL MAN CITY academy players. McTOMINAY.

McTominay was the FU to Pogba but I agree with the Pep stuff. That record (or another they set before he leaves) will be there awhile.
