Wake Forest Football 2018 Offseason Discussion

IMO, the Tulane game will be a struggle and there will be an over-reaction after an off-season of good vibes.

Totally agree. On the other hand, if we play well and win handily, we will see the inevitable flurry of "it must be asked" posts predicting an Atlantic division title and double-digit win season.

I predict we win a tough game by 7-10 points and fans feel good about having momentum going into Towson and BC. Fans will be split on Newman vs. Hartman.

Not a bold prediction.

I'll read the move of Hinton as positive.

Hinton is a dynamic playmaker and the staff wants him on the field somewhere after the suspension is over.

Hinton is willing to do what the staff asks to atone for his mistakes-including play another position.

The staff right now thinks that one or both of the young guys will be as good or better at QB for the last 10 games with three games experience than Hinton with three years experience.

Clawson feels good about his young QBs and he has a talented player with two years of eligibility left coming back in Game 4.

Wake rushes for 350+

I’m guessing the real surprise will be how well our defense performs at Tulane.

Being favored against BC, that’s going to be the first real challenge. Can we bring the necessary intensity and win a tough fight against a legit Heisman candidate?

If it were at a school like Louisville, I'd read the WR practice being a way to get around the suspension. "What? We suspended him as the QB. He will still be playing as WR though."

If Louisville were the third game i might be totally into at least having them think that.

Something else that hasn't been discussed much is the loss of Mike Weaver to graduation. Right now the coaching staff cannot be feeling that getting the ball to the 30 is a near certain three points.

One of the new guys is going to need to step up for that to be reality again.

Totally agree. To me, his loss is equal to losing Wofford. We took him and his excellent KO's, FG's and XP's for granted....and we forget how consistantly iffy the center snaps were too.

Is this Hinton’s first practice at WR. Clawson mentioned Hinton changing positions last week. What did Hinton do in last week’s scrimmage?

Not to be a broken record, but there wasn't a scrimmage last week. I don't know what's gotten lost in translation with that, but : no scrimmage. The first one of fall camp is Saturday.

I guess Tanner Price started as true frosh. Tanner Price would win 8 games this year with the talent this team has.

There was a change in snapper during last season. Things got better. There is also a freshman LS who spent time with the long snapping guru, Chris Rubio. Presumably he is being redshirted this season to get acclimated to college FB. At least he has some good training on how to be a long snapper and if the current snapper struggles, could step in.

BTW, on the Twitter vids, someone was kicking what looked to be 35-40 yd FG's with room to spare.

Maggio doing KO's too.

Not freshman Tanner Price. He wasn't particularly good.

AIR, and correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't we ( Lobo ) stupidly running an option offense that year with Price much more a drop-back QB ?

All of that is good news. Maggio seems to be capable of doing either place kicking or punting. Let the new guys sort it out as to who does what best. Maggio does the other. I don't think doing both would work well for Maggio or Wake. Maybe Kickoffs and punting together. If he is busy kicking off, he isn't doing much punting in games.

Wouldn't read too much into Hinton being WR-only today.

I'm sure he will back to a green jersey tomorrow. Coaches probably wanted WR-only reps today.

IF Hartman/Newman runaway with the QB position in the first 3 games, then we HAVE to get Hinton on the field as he is the next-best playmaker behind Dortch. Think this practice today was just preparing for that possibility.

If Maggio is kicking off this year, it's because the grad transfers (Osteen and Ford) are both injured. They're not going to risk overworking Maggio because in the spring he tried to do too much, and was injured because of it.

Zach Murphy and Nick Sciba are the ones who would be making 35-40-yarders with room to spare. Murphy made a 53-yarder today.
