I think you overestimate how many deplorables there are. Congress will turn on him within a few days.

With these tell-all books it becomes (somewhat) politically dangerous to publicly deny any single claim because there's always the risk that a recording exists to prove it. Was the same with that Michael Wolff book.

Not that anything sticks these days anyway

Yeah, expecting Trump's base to ever turn on him in more than small numbers is fool's gold at this point. Trump could have walked into that press conference today, physically shoved Sanders away from the podium and called her a dumb cunt, and proceeded on national television to call Omarosa, the Obamas, and pretty much every black person in attendance a lying n----, and while there would be outrage from most of the news media, his approval rating probably wouldn't drop more than five points, and would go back up within a couple of weeks. Paul Ryan, McConnell, and few other GOPers might issue mild denunciations about how they "regretted his language" and how they hoped that that he would be less insensitive in the future, and that's about it. His base has convinced themselves that he's the Second Coming, and that's all there is to it. Fortunately, his base doesn't make up a majority of the American people, but he doesn't care about that. As long as his base still loves him, that's all that matters to him, and to the GOP in Congress.

Yep. Social media (and probably actual media) will be full of people claiming that if rappers can use the word, the president can. Then we’ll have a think piece in the Atlantic or NY Times editorial section on who can and cannot say that word. And nothing will change except for more people will be emboldened to use the word in public.

No. He didn’t pay the price for “grab them by the pussy” because his base wishes they could get away with it too. Same for publicly using the n-word. They’ll laugh at the “snowflakes” and “SJWs” for getting angry about it.

Could be wrong, but I think it was someone else playing the tape for Omarosa-so not necessarily used in front of a black person.

Anyway, he'd lose a few points IMO. I still hear people ask "how is Trump racist?". because to them, something isn't racist unless it contains the n-word (or perhaps an articulated ideology like the Al Campanis interview). He'll have his die-hards, of course, but it doesn't take much of a drop for him to be unelectable-(a shift in 1% would lose him PA, WI, and MI).

If principled behavior still mattered, we could play tapes of conservative pundits losing their shit when Obama used the word, but that might not make a difference these days.
