Wake Forest Offseason Basketball Thread: Deacs in Inaugural Myrtle Beach Invitational

Wonder if Wright can take some pg minutes if Brandon gets in foul trouble

I know you poo poo all things Manning and Wake Forest hoops, but I'm not sure this result will inspire hope for anyone.

I think most around here would agree that our starters (Hoard, Brown, Chill, Sarr, ?) are talented enough talent to allow us to at least compete in pretty much every game on the schedule... The problem is the massive drop-off after those guys. We've got 5 or so players that are newcomers and complete mysteries (Mucius, Lewis, Wright, Wynn, Johnson) and 2 others where we kind of know what to expect (Smart & Okeke). It's fair to assume that Manning still doesn't really know what he has coming off of the bench. If we don't get positive surprises from (at least) couple of those guys, it is going to be a very long season.

If sportsnut is correct on how the ECU game went, that is more evidence of the above... And not really a reason to be hopeful.

Huh? Hoard has never played a second of college basketball, Chill honestly wouldn't start for the majority of the ACC B-Ball programs, Sarr has yet to truly prove that he can play the 4/5 spots consistently and Chaundee showed flashes for about 1/3 of the season last year.

I totally agree that they each show promise and are probably significantly more talented than most other players on WF's team, but don't confuse that with the rest of college B-Ball. Their talent alone will not allow us to compete with 'pretty much every game on the schedule' by a long shot. I think that's pretty unrealistic. I also think we have no concept anymore of just how far we have fallen. Hope I'm wrong, but we are going to get steamrolled this year.

Thanks, Ayo. Was just going to drop that news on here for you folks. Appreciate it!

Nestor is a great guy, and coached hoop for more than 40 years.

He took George Mason to the NCAAs before Larranaga. Deep WF connections as he was an assistant under Tacy, Odom and Frank Haith (at Missouri). Dude knows hoop.

Nice, so he knows how to work a bag?

I wasn't suggesting those 4 are in any way an elite group within the ACC... I am just saying that, ostensibly, there is enough pure talent there that we shouldn't get blown out right from the tip against most teams (maybe vs. Duke, UVA, UNC and @UT).

My concern is less with those guys and more with what happens when those guys have to sit for more than a few minutes and the wheels fall off.

The Nestor news is good.

Feels like many around here have been looking for an experienced head coach on the bench for a while now... This is exactly that.

Obviously Nestor isn't a long-term solution, but his presence can only help Manning (assuming Manning is willing to listen).

Let's get this out of the way: seems like a net positive for Wake Forest basketball in the short term. Nestor is a solid dude who can coach.

That said, this is such a Wake Forest thing to do. Feels like another Wellman attempt to meddle in the program. Rearranging the deck chairs hoping that it's somehow going to keep the ship afloat. Couldn't get anyone else to join the staff, so had to go pull at the heart strings of a retired man with strong Wake ties. Fill the staff with guys who are popular with long time Deacons as additional cover for Wellman when he decides not to fire Manning after another atrocious year. Between Chill and Nestor, that's a strong attempt to pacify the big DC donors who remember fondly the days when those guys lead Wake to greatness.

“It stretches us a little bit, but I also think it’s a good stretch. We don’t have any spots that kids can break in and learn the coaching profession,” Manning said about the situation at ACC Operation Basketball earlier this month. “Now we have some staff that gets to take on some director of operations responsibilities, so that’s a positive in their growth and development. It helps prepare guys who are non-coaching staff members doing different things across the board.”

Says the guy who hires and promotes his own son and then hires a previously retired guy to fill a vacant role.

Exactly

We did not lose to ECU, our subs did but not the first team guys.

Also Manning did his usual brain farts with the sub patterns and it looked like we changed whole lines as in hockey

First, thanks for your info and reports on the team from your sources and providing us insight into what you have heard from others closer to the program. We do really appreciate it, despite what RChill may say.

Second, glad the starters fared okay as I was worried my prediction of 16 wins was beginning to look much too pollyanna in its optimism. Honestly, I was just trying to be something other than completely pessimistic.

Lastly, thanks for reminding me that DM is a dunderhead when it comes to managing his line ups, sub patterns and just overall approach to coaching. So I will reserve any further judgment until I see them play live myself on 11/10 when I head up to Winston. Even if we somehow suffer the same type of scare we did last year vs Queens (doubtful from what I've ready about BA) on Saturday, I will refrain from dropping my wins prediction down to 14 from 16. Although I find it hard to muster any belief that we'll be able to win more than 5 games in the ACC.

I agree with this take 100%.

Welcome back Ernie! Have fun when you are named Interim Head Coach so we don't have to fire Childress when Manning is shown the door next March.

That's the exact kind of :bullshit: I fear. The next coaching change should be a wholesale change. Everyone fired, start again. There's no benefit to continuity back to such utter failure. Reboot, restart. Brand new coach, brand new staff, brand new facilities.

Edit: You edited your post. I'd be great with firing Manning mid-season and letting Nestor finish it out. Gives us a big head start on going after a hungry and capable coach who is ready to build his program at a place with all of the potential and resources you could hope for.
