NC State game 7:30 Thursday

Happy to be wrong about Newman he looked really good last night.

What a win for this program. Get one of the last two and let's go bowling again.

I don't know who I like best in this shot. The kid in the lower left corner? The bro in the blue hoodie? The guy in the jersey in dead center? The two beefy dudes about to high five in the lower left?

Why on earth would State go for it on Wake's 20 on 4th down instead of kicking the field goal to go up 6? Wake was great last night but State made some serious mistakes.

To win the game. They get 4 yards and the game is over. That’s definitely the right call. If they had kicked the FG, we could have done the exact same TD drive to win.

I'd say most coaches would have taken a 6 pt lead and forced the other team to go for TD instead of a FG to tie the game. Kickoff also takes additional time off the clock.

Most coaches make poor percentage decisions because of conventional wisdom and to brace against fan reaction.

Don't know if this was posted yesterday, but:

Yeah, going for it on 4th down there isn’t a bad call to me.

State did plenty of gagging last night, though - that wide open dropped TD catch being at the top of the list.

Once our Athletic Department photo shops out the boobs in the upper left (no further comment), this should be the cover of our Football Media Guide or whatever print materials we use. Great shot. Hoodie guy is terrific.

LOL at the NCSU trolls we allow to post here. "Not trolling, just asking...why did you get rid of a successful coach, seems like you would..." blah blah --- LMAO at urine in the stands, shots fired at tailgate, you are still NC State.

Exactly. Going was the right call, they just didn't pick it up. Doesn't mean this wasn't the correct decision.

Doesn't that Dortch tweet come across kinda like he would have preferred to go to State over Wake? Anyways, he's still the man. Can't wait to rewatch this afternoon after meetings wrap up.

I believe he took a visit there and was being recruited - just didn't receive an offer. Seems like run of the mill rubbing their nose in snubbing him rather than preferring to go there.

I'm not saying it was a bad call but a field goal would have made our td drive tougher. State had to defend much tighter in to try and stop a game tying field goal. If they knew we needed a td they would have kept more DBs back to prevent what ended up happening. Who knows but I doubt state is up right with man coverage up 6 there. They clearly were playing to keep us out of fg range.

They only needed 4 yards against a generally soft (but motivated) defense. I think it was the right call. Deacs just stepped up.

From the N&O today:

But N.C. State had never been able to run the ball all night, and that inability to milk the clock gave Wake Forest a chance. And if Dave Clawson has proven anything in his time at Wake Forest, it’s that if you give him an opening, he’ll find a way to steer his team through it.
When N.C. State went for it on 4th-and-short from the Wake Forest 20 in an attempt to put the game away and Ryan Finley couldn’t connect with Thayer Thomas, the opening was there.
In seven plays and one minute, third-string quarterback Jamie Newman led the Deacons into N.C. State territory, to the 32-yard line. He hit tight end Jack Freudenthal over the middle, and wide receiver Alex Bachman took out a pair of State defenders with an impeccably timed block. Freudenthal wandered into the end zone as State’s chances at history wandered away.

Scenario 1: You go and pick up the fourth down, the game is over (100% chance of winning if you get it)
Scenario 2: You kick the field goal and miss (no chance to end the game outright, up by 3)
Scenario 3: You kick the field goal and make (no chance to end game outright, up by six)
Scenario 4: You go and miss it (chance to end the game outright, worst case you're where you would've been if you missed a field goal)

I'd have to believe scenarios 1 and 4 combined provide a better chance to win than 2 and 3 combined.

Can call faircatch on kickoff with no time off clock and get ball at 25 which was better than we started from

Who cares, we got him. Matt Colburn was committed to Louisville, so he wanted to play there at least then, do we care now?
