Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

Russell Turner would not be an exciting choice. Let’s get someone who is on their way up the ladder not someone who has plateaued.

Borrowing from another thread, I think a Russell Turner hire would register about 2/10 on the excitement level for me. And that's probably generous.

I think Oats and Matta are the first calls.

Agree. I think those two make up my first teir of "realistic hires (with Cronin being high first tier if there was somehow any interest whatsoever).

I don't love the coaching pool outside of a couple options, so my next group would probably consist of Chris Collins, Earl Grant, Lavall Jordan, and Steve Prohm in no particular order.

Before I second the nomination, I am going to need clarification on his thoughts on mid-season firings.

eh, I don't see the point, you can start putting out some feelers now for candidates and get some brownie points for treating Manning with respect (especially after catching a lot of crap for how we treated Dino)

I don't think it's about being worried about him leaving..

It's about "rater bias" in the hire process. Presume he already knows people at the AD and Wake.. So he has a head start on coming in. No one is thinking about if he leaves. It's about the entry.

Don't care if WF wins the press conference. Just want the next coach to actually build a competitive program. Don't want to be in this position again in 5 years.

The only way to re-build the WF basketball fan-base is build a winner. The buzz over a splashy hire only helps until WF loses to Gardner-Webb.

I get (but do not agree with) the argument that Thad Matta should receive the initial offer, but prudent planning suggests that a Plan B is also needed after Matta balks.

Thad Matta would be a great choice, but I think he's got a really, really bad back condition. Physically, I don't know how long he would hold up. I think this back condition is partly why he left OSU.

Is this a good thing at this stage?

Definitely. I just view the splashier hires as the ones who have a greater chance of success.

If I was unhappy at the time of a hire and the person ended up building a winner here, you wouldn't find a happier person in the world to eat his words.

I withdraw your nomination.

I agree with your top 3, in that order. Wes Miller does not have a resume that warrants consideration for an ACC coaching job. But then again, Wake Forest may not really be an ACC caliber coaching job at this point.

Agreed on Wes. Disagree on the job.

I'm as pessimistic as they come about the last two coaches, but I'm still very optimistic about Wake as a whole. I would think that any coach would look at our place in the ACC, the huge TV contract/money and our fantastic new facilities, and think we're a sleeping giant of a program with all sorts of potential. On top of that, success will bring a huge jump in ticket and general giving DC revenue that has been absent the last 9 years that a coach should be able to negotiate to be reinvested into the program. There just aren't that many programs that can offer all of what we have, and many of them are blue blood type programs where few will actually get a shot at any open jobs that come up. Wake is a destination job IMO, The fact that [name redacted] and Manning struggled at Wake is evidence of just how bad they are rather than evidence of how bad a job Wake is.

The only X factor is Wellman and his "restrictions" on recruiting that led to the Dino/[name redacted] switch, but given the level of student that Manning has been allowed to recruit and the fact that we brought in Hoard who can be found in multiple interviews expressing his plan to jump after 1 year, I think Wellman hasn't given up on his OWG dream team plans.

I really don't think Marshall is a realistic possibility, but I do hope we call him anyway. It seems like he's making a ton of money as WSU, and it's unlikely he'll take a pay cut to come coach at WF. Matta is more realistic, but I'm not hopeful he will come out of retirement. He would instantly make our program credible again.

The two don't even compare. Manning is terrible and has a terrible record here and we are getting worse. Firing Dino after a post-season appearance and the record he compiled while taking over after the death of his friend...very different. Oh and the smear campaign. DM requires no campaign. We paid him a lot to suck. I think we'll be fine.

On the other hand, if we are going to pay Manning anyway might as well make him stick around and smell the shite of his efforts.

Got to put in a call to Gregg Marshall to see if he’s interested.

His first OWG dream team was captained by an accused rapist and led on the floor by a flashy top 50 recruit so I’m not sure how committed he was to those plans in the first place.

Our next basketball coach will not be Thad Matta or Gregg Marshall.

Get that through your thick dwarf skulls.

Reviewing them helps establish a scale for other potential coaches. How close to one of them can Wake get?
