Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

We don't have recruiting restrictions. We have gone after high school students from all sorts of diploma factories in the last couple of years.

Agree except for the bizarre line that WF has drawn with respect to JUCOs (see the Diamond Deacs thread).

The list of excuses Manning slipped Cory Alexander during the Clemson broadcast seems to have worked.

Yeah, it's odd...I somewhat understand it since credits don't really transfer, but I don't think it is a major restriction for basketball. How many Top 25 teams regularly employ JUCO transfers? Maybe it's more than I realize?

Just like DR has been on the Wes Miller hype train forever, I have been on the Josh Pastner hate train forever, and have been trying to tell you thick skulled dwarves that he is terrible for 20 years now.

Sames! I figured I had you beat but you got me by a few months, and came much more strongly, as well:

I will sever all ties with anything containing the same letters as Wake Forest if Pastner is mentioned in any kind of serious manner regarding possibly being part of a short list of potential coaching candidates. It might make it tough to spell shit, but I can adapt.

Even if Pastner would come here, he wouldn't seem to fit what Wellman is looking for.

And I am cool with that. Dude can recruit ... and in that regard he walked into a pretty ideal situation following Calipari ... but I've yet to be at all convinced by his coaching abilities

There are some quality JUCOs contributing for Power V teams. Derek Funderburke (6-10) has been a regular contributor at State this year. JUCO recruiting is typically not the best way to build a team, but when you have unbalanced roster or lots of turnover a JUCO here or there can help.

Is there precedent for a successful major coaching hire with a lame duck AD being relegated to the sidelines? Because, again, why the hell would he be in charge of this next hire? Somehow Louisville was able to move on from that absolute disaster pretty damn quickly by ditching their shit bag AD and hiring Mack (and dumping Petrino).

Maybe this is crazy but I’d love Dave Odom as interim for the remainder of the season...it would be like Grobe to Baylor

0% chance of Marshall.

Matta is somewhere north of that. Definitely worth a call. Agree that it is unlikely, but not so unlikely that you don't give it a shot.

I was in the young & cheap camp, assuming this job is considered borderline toxic. I don’t know if that’s the case or not. But Matta is a unique situation . If he’s looking at Georgia and ole miss, I still think we are at least better than mid tier SEC programs. Maybe not.

Yeah, I question what job exactly Matta would be holding out for. I doubt he's gonna get a top 10-15ish job when he comes back, those are hard to get.

I don't think there's a helluva lot of difference after that, and Wake can absolutely become a regular NCAA tournament team given our placement in the ACC

Cory Alexander also said nobody knew Dinos was going to go pro even though we had been talking about it since Dinos’ freshman year when it was mentioned during a broadcast, possibly by Cory Alexander himself.

I don't think Matta is the answer. He blew his coaching wad at Ohio State. We need a younger coach with a solid track record who needs more support and resources (and compensation) than they're currently getting. Back up the Brinks truck and tell that person to solve the problem. Hire their own staff, engage the current students and alumni, re-institute a culture of excellence into the MBB program and seek counsel from former players at all levels.

Literally fly in former greats and successful classes of basketball Deacs from the past and hold a private conference at say, Graylyn and lay it all out there. Wellman should stand up and tell the room that he made some critical errors, Wake's MBB history is too important not to get right and here is what we're thinking moving forward. I can think of a number of scenarios that would play out if this were to happen...and all of them are better than the current shit show we're seeing.

Matta is holding out because:

1) He is getting paid more than $million a year by tOSU;
2) He has significant back issues;
3) He has a kid in HS.

If he doesn't get a top 15ish job now, Matta can wait.

FWIW, pretty strong argument can be made that WF presently is not a top 50 job. There are 75 schools among the Power 6 conferences. At this point, fair to say WF is in the bottom 3rd. FWIW, WF has finished in the top 50 once in the last 10 years (#36 in 2017). If you want to argue that WF is in the top 50, regardless of it's on the court performance over the last decade, the reasonable limit is between #40 to #50, and that's a stretch.

Just don't see Thad Matta deciding to give up $1.2 million a year (and the possibility of coaching a true top 25 program at some point in the future) to try to climb the ACC ladder. Understand why WF would gauge his interest, but don't see it happening. Also, as previously stated, Matta turned down more than $3 million a year for 5 years from UGA. WF is going to have to offer more than that to get him. Depending on the amount of cash needed to buy-out Manning, that may not be doable. If WF is committed to DM for something between $2 million and $3 million for the next 5 years; there is no chance WF can also offer $3 million+ for 5 years to the next coach. Just not that kind cash available even if the big donors step to the plate.

It was probably Childress, since those two are tight (think Alexander mentioned earlier in the year that he lived with the Childress family for a year or something way back in high school when they were both friends with Lawrence "Poetry In" Moten), but still. Alexander probably not going to talk shit (truth) during Wake broadcasts.

All the more reason to fire a coach midseason. Instead of making excuses for the coach, announcers will talk about why Wake is a good job and maybe even potential coaches.

Exactly.

Do we think ronnie or danny was the dummy passing out talking points about why this years shit show is not so bad? If its danny he is trying to keep his job or make excuses for it not being his fault. If ronnie it harms the coaching search or begins the danny is staying and we need the enablers on board.

Pretty sure the job of the SID is to pass out talking points.

It's a horrible argument. I think coaches are smart enough and believe in their abilities enough that they know that they won't struggle to the same degree that two truly bad college head coaches have.

I see no reason why Wake can't be at the very least on the level of a Miami under Larranaga, making the tourney almost every year and threatening to go deep occasionally (know they're struggling this year). The coach matters a helluva lot in college hoop

Probably right. But they were directed by someone. Probably ronnie.

Yup. I think this is what is so infuriating. We have had 10 years of talking points about why we are so terrible. Would be nice for announcers to admit the obvious that we haven't been very well coached/managed as a program for a while, but what potential we have for the right coach. The constant excuse making is killing us as much as our actual performance at this point.

Doesn’t the attractiveness of a job usually come down to money? Will Wake pay at a top 25 level? Top 40?
