Institutional Malpractice

I was a career losing record coming off a losing season. I can't fathom anyone was a fan of the hire

Not going down that rabbit hole, but in summation, there were like two or three years in my life where I watched a shitload of NBA games, like too many games. Cannot remember if NBA ticket existed then (late 90s), but I watched a lot of Denver Nuggets games when they sucked and before they drafted Carmelo. Those Nuggets teams worked really hard and were obviously professionally coached. I thought it would translate to college. I was wrong. It stubbornly took me too long to admit I was wrong.

He has the ones who matter. The rest of us don’t.

Yea, I just don’t agree with this. I represent many of the names synonymous with Wake athletics. The love is long gone. This is a Hatch problem.

Ron is not gonna retire. He wants to show everyone he can fix basketball, and given an unlimited amount of time and huge wads of cash, he just might luck out someday. But don't hold your breath.

Calling bs. Unless I misunderstand "represent." The question is does the success of football and to a lesser extent tennis, soccer, and baseball counterbalance the mistakes made in hoops? I think the answer is yes. I may not agree w it, but I also can't say Ron has thoroughly and completely sucked the last 10 yrs as AD. I'd like that narrative to be true but it just isn't.

Wellman's Achilles over the last decade is enthusiasm. It seems only soccer has managed to harness both local and alumni enthusiasm. And we are talking a few thousand. We will lose Clawson if we don't gin up rabid enthusiasm to accompany success. So far, it hasn't happened. RW seems to have a "build it and they will come philosophy." He's also focused on the comfort of the major donors. I think this is where he is vulnerable. There is no good reason why groves was half empty last year. It takes work to fold in local support and he has shat the bed. We lose Clawson if we don't work this problem.

This is an insane view. Wellman has completely destroyed the only sports related thing that Wake was good at and people cared about.

People all over the country know that Wake exist because they used to be good at basketball.

Take away the ACC and Wake's affiliation and their basketball success and Wake is Elon.

But nobody is taking away our affiliation w the acc so we are not elon. I am not dismissing your rational - I just don't think it is universal. I also think it is too convenient to dismiss other positives

donaldross isn't the first to post that there is a difference of opinion between Wellman and Hatch regarding Manning. This is not to say anything positive regarding Wellman's role in the basketball fiasco. He is and will remain responsible for the downfall. It has been suggested that Wellman finally realized that Manning should be replaced but that Hatch has been resistive. The terminology used was that Manning has Hatch in his pocket. Maybe so. At this point, the program is at an all time low and both Wellman and Hatch bear responsibility for its duration. If Manning's contract is fully guaranteed, both are responsible. Mistakes this enormous and long lasting generally require poor leadership and lack of accountability on multiple levels.

It is shocking how much money Wake pays incompetent people. Wellman, Hatch, Manning.

It's almost as though the more incompetent you are, the higher the salary.

Just a really bad look for the school.

Respectfully disagree.

I suspect/hope that at 70+ years, it will soon be suggested to him that it's time....like maybe June 1st. New AD comes in and first order of business is to delicately remove Manning and hopefully hire a gem ASAP.

So, Wellman retires June 1st. It takes the summer or more to hire a new AD. That's far too late to think about firing Manning. Even in June, the coaching market is dried up.

More likely, a new AD doesn't do any hiring or firing the first year while he/she gets comfortable and evaluates the staff. Plus, if Manning stays, many will transfer, so the new AD gives Manning a pass next year. That's two more years of Manning at the helm.

Yes, this. If there really is a buyout of the size reported this handicaps the entire university. That should be punishable if there exists any accountability. If ther is no accountability then the university as a whole is at risk.

Then it would be fair to say at this point, the University as a whole is at risk.

Clawson is 28-35 (12-28) at WF. I mean I think he’s generally doing a good job but the idea he’s going to fly the coop any day now is not based in fact.

Wellman has destroyed the only sport at WF that (1) WF can be truly competitive in and (2) that people give a shit about.

Clawson was 2-14 his first two years. I don't think he's going to go anywhere but he's certainly put together a good season next year and he could get another job at a p5 school

too many lawyers in fanbase

Disagree that Wake can only be competitive in hoops. Disagree that people only give a shit about hoops. Football feeds the coffers. You think we built a whole football indoor practice facility because nobody gives a shit? Just an illogical response.

We have a boutique football stadium and we should be able to fill it with a combination of students, young alumni, local alumni, locals, plus business and high school incentive programs. We do a half ass job of all of that except local alumni and a handful of businesses. For me, that's on Wellman. Last season I am willing to call a push because of the early season blowouts, but the season before last coming off our first winning season in a while and nice bowl win, was an opportunity to score about a 10,000 fan bump per home game and it didn't happen because Wellman just doesn't know how to do that.

You don't Clawson, who is a legit P5 program builder doesn't look up and see half empty seats? You could give those seats away to local football teams for $5 a seat or less and even that would make a big difference. Wellman egotistically thinks he can throw alumni money at the problem. Just give Clawson and staff a raise, but if they are in the process of building up a program, they need to see the same done in the enthusiasm of the fans. So far no go.

I think he meant competitive for national championships.
