Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

Everybody seems to assume that Wes would come to Wake if offered the job. Or could he turn us down due to being too close too home with his dad having his name on a facility, and making life difficult for the family if he fails?

If we quadruple his salary and offer him a job at an ACC school I find it difficult to believe he would turn that down.
 
Maybe Wake could use a "reverse" play for getting a good coach. Go hard after Dr. Smart for a named chair (Maya Angelou chair?) Then as part of the negotiations, inquire whether she has a spouse who could use something to do.

Right my point is that once you get past the “home run” but likely unrealistic choices that most schools aren’t hiring guys who have national brands. Otherwise they would be more likely to be in the home run category.
 
I went to KenPom to put Miller's accomplishments in context with the rest of the Southern Conference. The list shows the top 6 teams in the Southern Conference unless UNCG didn't finish top 6. In that case, I included every team above them.

A few weeks ago, Les published a piece interviewing someone from the Tulsa 247 site. I came to the realization that we really overrate coaches who win low major conferences. Winning one or two year doesn’t mean much because somebody has to win those conferences. Miller only has one conference championship in 8 years as a coach in a bad conference.

I don’t have a Kenpom subscription so I went year to year and went down the list and did a search for “SC.” Perhaps the most damning thing to the Southern Conference is that most years, “USC” and “San Franscisco” and sometimes “Lipscomb” came up before the first or second Southern Conference team.

I just don’t see the argument for Miller here. If he finishes Top 100, it would only be his second Top 100 KenPom in 8 seasons. And even then, he’s currently #4 in his conference. The conference is nothing special. This will probably be the first season in awhile with more than two Top 100 KenPom teams.

UNCG is improving. Sure. But I don’t see what distinguishes him from any other low major coach who has a few good seasons with a good player. None of the programs truly stand out. I would hope we can find a coach who has either had a consistent track record of success over 5-10 years or has done much more in a shorter amount of time.

Most schools aren't in the ACC. Most schools don't haven't produced two Hall of Famers and other NBA All Stars over the past twenty-five years.

There should be a vast difference between the type of people hired at Wake versus DePaul or Wake vs. Ole Miss.

We shouldn't have to be LOWF. We should aim high and make that shot an open and easy one. Sadly, we have an AD and university president that don't act that way.
 
To answer your question directly, yes, many those that live on Tobacco Road want Miller as their next coach—all 4 schools.

Of course they can be better. They’re the fourth highest ranked team in their conference.

WTF is wrong with you. They won the last 2 reg seasons and last year’s tournament. They stomped Furman and won @ ETSU (again) WF sucks. And some fix it because of this type of discourse. Pro Humanitate = take your beating

Wrong. At the St Johns game I was equally shocked when 2 different folks mentioned it.

Y’all may well get your wish this March. Not hiring Miller would be a colossal, generational fuck up. We don’t do it and I’m gone.

Mike Brey
Johnny Dawkins
Tommy Amaker
Quinn Synder
Chris Collins
The entire current Assistant staff
Any of the other high-level coaches they could pluck from any other school to come to Duke

To hire a UNC grad? These folks who mentioned are morons.

Maybe it was Jason Williams like when he told DR he wasn't playing against Wake that night.

DR is a good guy but this issue makes him look like an angry clown.

They’re 4th in Kenpom in their own conference. Hiring someone based on their connections to Wake is why Wake sucks.

Thanks Gene Hooks for hiring Odom, not because of his wake connections but because his wake connections allowed Hooks to see who he was.
