Diamond Deacs 2019 (Offseason) | 5 Deacs Drafted

I wonder if Currie's second hire will be baseball coach? Seems like Walter should be on the hot seat, given all the money that has been pumped in to the program and the general lack of success. He's really only had one good year and one decent year in his entire Wake tenure, right? And wasn't it just a few years ago that he interviewed for another job (Tulane?) but didn't get it? Seems like that most thought that was an attempt to move on before he got involuntarily moved on. There are definitely others that follow Wake baseball more than me, but it seems that Wake has consistently done all of the little things that it takes to lose baseball games - failure to capitalize on runners in scoring position, errors at the worse time, lack of pitching depth (walks, HBPs, WPs, etc. - while Walter has been managing. It seems that recruiting has improved, and it looked like the program was on an upward trajectory during that season 2 years ago. However, maybe that season was just a matter of catching lightning in a bottle. A bunch of guys that could mash, and the ability to hit a lot of HRs covered up other issues?

I don’t disagree with this. Walter is a super likable guy and knows baseball, but we have underperformed a lot of years. The facility upgrades should start paying off now. We will be fighting an uphill battle in baseball most years unfortunately no matter who is coaching.

Whatever. Manning is a nice guy as well...Baseball team going to disappoint yet again sadly :(

i think the teams kenpom rating (if it existed) would outpace their record so far. The hitting stats are really strong and the weekend starters have been okay. Obviously not a lot of pitching depth, but still figure the team will improve.

I agree; however the team just played arguably the easiest series on their ACC schedule and went 1-2

There are several computer rankings for college baseball. We are ranked about #100 in all of them.

The computer rankings are pretty rudimentary, more along the lines of RPI than KP. Baseball has even greater noise than other sports, so even run differential is insufficient, especially with small samples.

Didn't we lose the 3rd game at ND last season with some strange circumstances, as was yesterday? (pulled loss out of almost certain victory) Yesterday, We had a 3 run lead in 9th. Good work there guys. Then walked 3 batters on 12 straight pitches, I believe. They score three. Put the ball in the strike zone and if they hit it, you've got 8 guys working to supporting you. There is NO defense against a walk/s in most cases.

When ND scored (our catcher went down) for lead(?). Since the ND batter left the bat in the field of play that our catcher tripped over, why not an out for interference there?

Still venting -- We seem to, very often, take two seemingly pretty hit-able pitches early for 2 strikes, then get a called 3rd strike or poor offering at a pitch trying to 'paint' the corner. Seems we should be more aggressive in our batting. I know we want to get the pitcher's pitch count up, but maybe too far with that.

Was it Furman, needing one run late? Got man to 2nd on a double, no outs, but no effort to advance him to 3rd. I recall he was stranded there. Not the baseball we enjoyed in earlier years.

Also two games Menendez blew this weekend which is a huge bummer because he looked so dominant early.

To my point about the bats, everyone except for Mueller (.510 OPS) and Harvey (.471 OPS) seem to be hitting well. Muntz is crushing the ball (1.281 OPS) with Steel, Frick, Seymour, Lanzilli, Ludowig and Tinsman (and McNamee in limited ABs) swinging strongs bats, too. Poteet has struggled a bit, but still has a .758 OPS, and Turconi (.712 OPS) looks like a serviceable bat as well.

We have an RPI of 154. That's pretty god awful.

ND had 4 total wins coming into this past weekend. They're complete trash and they picked up 33 percent of their total wins in just 2 days.

We might be approaching #WalterOUT territory. This season so far has been utter nonsense considering the level of talent on this team.

Losing Hobbs to Arkansas is going to be the big obstacle we don't recover from. Late game 7 thru 9 out pitching has been atrocious giving up 40 plus runs in said innings.

Demoralizing to lose the last two despite leading both games late (on top of the 12 inning loss at Coastal last Tuesday). Will be on Walter and the players to keep the season from spiraling into the abyss.

This week, WF plays the Apps (6-8) and BC (8-6) at home. Need to start kicking arse or WF will be playing meaningless games through May. FWIW, BC has yet to play a home game this season. They have spent the last 4 weeks in Mississippi, Florida, and then a 10 day Spring Break in Kentucky. Playing college baseball on a team in the northern half of the country is brutal.

All the money poured into the baseball program had best start paying dividends or heads should roll.

Hobbs never led a dominant pitching staff at Wake. Offense led to most success and he clearly didn’t leave the pitching staff in great condition.

It is nice some guys are hitting the ball well so far but Baseball is and has always been a pitchers game, and we are not good there

Baseball is a game of hitters, pitchers and fielders. (baserunners, too, if you want to be specific)

This team is significantly worse than last year's team. I just don't get it

I don't either. To be honest, I wasn't expecting for Wake to be able to "host" this year. I was more expecting them to just make the dance and use that for next year as the "big" year but geez.

App State today on ESPN3. We'd better win. Our top recruit Cusick starting. His ERA is close to 9, but his peripherals are solid (12:4 K:BB ratio in 12 innings), so hopeful he'll turn the corner.

Already down 0-1. Cusick's delivery is slow, getting destroyed by baserunners.

through 3 innings, up 2-1 and Cusick has two consecutive 1-2-3 innings

however, offensively, we have had 9 hitters reach in 17 plate appearances (5 H, 3 BB, 1 E), we've stolen 3 bases, and we've scored only 2 runs with 6 LOB through 3
