Possible Wake Forest Coaching Candidates Analysis

With the Varsity Blues scandal, I’d think Wes Miller is off the potential list. It would be bad form to hire a donors kid in this environment at a school implicated in the scandal.

I don’t think anyone outside of Wake circles know the Millers are big donors and I doubt anyone cares. It’s not like Wes would be some random dude who was coaching church league and got hired by an ACC school.

Wonder if Ernie Nestor's opinions from his perspective of 30+ years in college coaching will enter into Wellman's evaluation/decision. He was obviously brought in to "coach the coaches", but also has an insider's look at practices, game planning, halftime adjustments, and what not (understanding that game planning and halftime adjustments are oxymorons in the case of DM...)

I agree. I just keep reading that we will not do so during the tournament. I wondered if it was customary in the ACC.
It's customary to keep Ron comfortable while he sips Chardonnay all week.

Stallings was fired by Pitt on the Thursday of last year’s ACCT iirc.

Lost on Tuesday, March 6th
Fired on Thursday, March 8th
Capel hired Tuesday, March 27th

Compare that to Bz/Manning in 2014:

Wake beats ND (81-69) on Wednesday, March 12th
Loses to Pitt (84-55) on Thursday, March 13th
Fired on Thursday, March 20th
Manning hired Friday, April 4th

I mean I agree that Wellman's desire to wait till after the ACC tournament doesn't make any sense but its his SOP

The delay last time was, in part, due to his role on
the selection committee. He wasn’t gonna make the move while he was in Indy. Now it may be his MO regardless. He fired Dino in April.

Other "recent" ACC changes:

2018:
Pittsburgh (details above)
Louisville - Announces Padgett won't return on 3/21; Mack hired 3/27

2017:
NCSU - Gottfried fired 2/18 (finished season); Keatts hired 3/17

2016:
Georgia Tech - Gregory fired 3/25; Pastner hired 4/8

2015: NONE

2014:
Wake Forest (details above)
Virginia Tech - Johnson fired 3/17; Williams hired 3/21
Boston College - Donahue fired 3/18; Christian hired 4/3

My takeaway from all of that is that it isn't unusual to wait until a week or so after you lose in the ACC Tournament to make a change... It's not just the Wake Forest Way.

God. I went to check out the comments on the Wake basketball Facebook page to get a pulse of what the folks in that cesspool are thinking. Those comment sections are a god damned nursing home. Actually kind of fitting when you think about it.

Eric Musselman deserves more discussion on this thread.

Yeah. I don't quite understand the "West Coast guy" argument...people move all over the damn place in a career as crazy as coaching.

He could be the Yin to Danny's Yang. Danny loses players. Musselman made Nevada into Transfer In U.

If we allowed him to do whatever we wanted, I bet we'd be good pretty quickly. But he seems like a West Coast guy and I'm not sure W-S is the right fit for him.

Certainly worth a call to his agent.
