Because if he gets bought out next year he's probably not going to be able to find another job that will pay base salary above what Texas did. But he probably wants to keep coaching at a high level. And a partial buyout would allow him to continue making that same salary and hopefully start winning at his next job where his base salary would get a big bump up on the next contract.
