WHY is he still our basketball coach?

Manning's contract is reported to be about $1.8m a year. He has six years left, how is the buyout $18m?

His original contract was $1.8M per year. We do not know what the new contract was.

If he has a buyout of $18M with 6 years left, that would imply he had a raise to $3M. Which would obviously be absurd.

Alternatively, I've suggested that perhaps the total deal value when it was signed was $18M. $18M over 8 years would work out to $2.25M per year. That would be a reasonable annual raise, but obviously ridiculous to not have a buyout clause.

The new contract raised him about $500k per year, starting in 2017-18.

I just can't believe Currie would take the job with an announcement of his hiring before the Manning decision if we were keeping Danny around. No way I would agree to that if I were him.

I said it when he was hired - what other opportunities for a power conference AD job were going to present themselves to Currie anytime soon? If he wanted to make that mid to high six figure salary, this was going to be his shot for the foreseeable future.

Even if true the pr is just a terrible terrible look

There is no PR I am aware of except from Les. I do appreciate Les trying to being transparent.

I still stand behind Currie not taking the job unless firing is allowed. May take a few extra days, but I believe it will still happen.

I agree with your conclusion about Manning going, but I disagree about Currie. He wasn't in a position to say no. If we said to him "The job is yours, but you've got Manning for at least another year" he still would have run to sign the contract before we could change our minds.

If he is retained, money will be the main reason but another factor is the fact that Manning is African American. Hatch and his goons are so politically correct they don't like the perception of firing an African American.

This is not even on the list of reasons why. Not to mention the bulk of the AD (including the guy at the helm) aren't exactly card carrying Democrats

It's okay to be a moron, but try to avoid being a victimized white moron.

This is a monumentally bad take. Jesus.

Give me a fucking break.

Umm, no.
Maybe sit the next few plays out, Champ.

This is the Ron Wellman of bad takes.

Why can't you believe it? He's probably quadrupling his salary, at least. Put up with a lame duck coach for a year, rake in the money, with no expectations? Sure, why not.

Don't feed the troll guys. Race is not an issue in this. Bad coaching is colorblind.

Yeah, the idea that you wouldn't take the AD job at your alma mater because you have to put up with an incompetent coach who you can't afford to fire for one season, while 95% of the other sports are doing just fine, is pretty dumb.

look on the bright side, guys - our chances of some sloppy, angry donaldross posts and/or Tweets are much higher this way

I still have faith he is going to be gone.

But, did anyone do the research on the power 5 coaches with the worst records after 4-5 years to still be retained? I would love to see those numbers. His retention could be unprecedented.
