Manning Returning for 2019-2020 - b/c basketball decision, obvi

Here’s a theory - maybe been offered before in part. Ron extends Clawson after his third year when the program shows significant signs of life. Feeling that he’s been proven right after a successful 2017 season and off a home win over a ranked state rival, he decides the time is right to commit to Danny and do what needs to be done to make sure he stays here — believing the basketball program to be in a similar position to what football was post 2016, unfazed by the slow start

Bringing this back. The more that happens, the more I become convinced this is how things went down

I’m in Columbia to see first round games and before uva and Gardner Webb they showed interviews with various players and coaches about march madness . Then they showed Danny Manning, Head Coach Wake forest. I stood up and booed. It made me feel 1% better

If the buyout is truly the issue, Manning will be around much longer than one season. That's what is so scary about this. We may be tied to him for years unless he resigns or is willing to negotiate out of it.

As for the players, they all committed to play at Wake and play for Manning, so I doubt they'd come out publicly and trash the coach that has just been retained. I wouldn't take their tweets too seriously. The most serious part of this is looking at another 3-4 years of Manning until the buyout gets to be more reasonable.

Let's say the buyout is $18 million if Manning is let go this year as has been reported, does it go down $15 million next year? Usually its a guaranteed amount of money that is lowered yearly by the salary of the coach. So why would $15 million and three straight losing seasons be easier to swallow than $18 million and two 20 loss seasons in a row?

If the buyout really is the issue, I do not see how this is resolved by letting him coach another season?

No clue, but maybe the contract guaranteed him 3 years, so the full 18 mil

But after that it drops down if fired during/after the 4th year of the extension?

But it is Wellman and his TBI, so who knows

now is the time for Kansas to come calling. We adore Coach Manning so much we locked him down with a huge buyout, but could his alma mater have pockets deep enough to bring back their most beloved son?

But NO ONE wanted Manning. No other program in the country was sniffing around. Even if Wellman was acting off of his success with Clawson, why so much and for so long? He doomed our program, and now he skips off to a generously funded retirement, shit-eating grin intact. “Better luck next time, guys!”

jaybone is a first ballot hof awful sports board poster. He may be a hof bad poster, but I'm not really up on the history/his posts on the Pit/Tunnels.

Dude literally said earlier the reason why we ended up with Manning was because tons of other coaches decided that they didn't want to deal with the expectations of our fanbase. That was the hottest take these boards have ever seen.

Best I can assess, the thinking was I'm so good at this and I believe in Manning (like all of my hires) so much that eventually other schools will come calling for him, and they won't be able to take him.

Also supported by the LOWF-ness that permeates the program

I do not comment much on the boards (enjoy reading, get some info, a few laughs, etc). I also am pretty patient with giving coaches a chance to succeed. But I simply do not understand this decision - it must be money (buy out) driven because the performance is just not there. Danny is an extremely poor coach, the record is awful over 5 years, kids have jumped from the program in record numbers and he has severely under performed with the talent that has been attracted to the program (recruiting has been okay, not great).

I am a Wake grad, bleed black & gold and will never, ever cheer against the Deacs but I cannot watch Wake basketball games anymore - the results are pre-determined. I really feel bad for the players because there could be so much more.

Looking forward to cheering on Coach Clawson and the Football team in person at home games and providing support to the soccer, baseball, tennis and all other programs. Basketball is done until we have a new coach.

Of course it's money driven. Every single thing at Wake Forest is money driven. And that is a culture that starts at the top and funnels down to every facet of the university.

Manning is going to get paid regardless of whether he coaches another minute at Wake Forest or not. IMO, John Currie can totally change the trajectory of his time as the AD at Wake by firing the anti-coach on May 2.
*Get rid of Danny. Going to have to pay him anyway
*Move Randolph to the INTERIM head coach for ONE YEAR ONLY.
*Pay Randolph the minimum but let him run the team as he sees fit. This will allow him to show what he can do without the [NR] and 6'11" empty suit.
*Begin preparing for this time next year to vet those coaches that would be a good fit for Wake Forest (not the AD's little friend)
*Allow Randolph to be hired as a coach at another school to build his own career (if that is what he wants to do)

I believe that the only way that revenue will be generated during the season is to do these things. I would guess that more fans would come to the game if Randolph and Ernie were running the show. I, personally, can NEVER go to a Wake Forest basketball game as long as DM is the coach. Plus, I believe that if Randolph were allowed to coach as he sees fit that there would be much more energy. I am very disappointed in this decision by RW but am not surprised. It is just such a WFU thing to do and that is sad. As a Deacon Club member, I will renew my season tix only for football but not basketball. What I better NOT hear is any talk about paying for and building new facilities for athletics. No money for contract buyouts, no money for new digs. And no talk at all about renovations to the Joel. The arena needs a great basketball team with great coaching - the fans will come out and then when after a few years of absolute success, the concept of making some minor aesthetic changes may be warranted. Cameron Indoor Stadium is a cozy gym steeped in history and tradition but it is hardly a luxury palace with no luxury boxes and all that nonsense. What makes CIS is their team and their fans and the intimacy of the court.

Why are people clamoring for Randolph as an interim solution? Dude has been on deck for the worst 9 years in ACC history, and, according to several posters, has poor relationships with players. He's part of the problem, not part of the solution.

NO, I said we got our 5th choice hire and part of that was the due to the billboard bs. It was a bad look on the cusp of a new hire.

You can think that is total horseshit, but the fact is we had a hof coach in Prosser, and an okay coach in Dino, and the fanbase went apeshit crazy on Bzd within minutes of the hire and we've essentially been shit ever since with the exception of JC. Those are facts. You can argue how we got there, but to dismiss my opine as the stupidest of all time in the face of "dumb and lazy" and 5 yrs after the Billboard opens us up to commit the same mistakes we've already made.

Moving on. Fire all the assistant coaches. Bring in people who know basketball. Your move Currie.
