Inside the pampered world of DC’s VIP diners

no, it's not 'bad' for you. nothing is 'bad' for you just like nothing is 'good' for you. Unless you're allergic to it, food is fucking food.

the way its farmed to feed the mass of humanity is awful for the planet, indeed

I'd eat a steak raw.

I love steak tartare.

Steak is awful. Go vegetarian, just don't over cook your tofu.

A life without meat is not worth living. I went vegetarian (not pescatarian like most of the frauds out there) for a month when I was 23/24 just to see if I could do it. Tried every meat substitute (black bean, tofu, etc) and they all sucked. Gained five pounds from carb loading, and was in a depressed state for the last two weeks. Ended up eating cereal for just about every meal the last week.

I'll never go back to that. I'm all for my eco-friendly meat raising protocols, but I'll go full blown cannibal before I became a vegetarian.

Sucks that you are such a pussy you couldn't give up meat for more than 30 days.

I'm in the camp that animals should be responsibly and respectfully farmed, meaning meat is less common and more expensive. Would totally support a ban on the huge factory farms that make up so much of our meat production.

I had tofu turkey for T'Giving one year due to a vegetarian gf. I had to mostly shut up about it until her Italian immigrant dad demanded that there be a real turkey, too.

I am a past vegetarian...bacon, enough said.

regardless, beef is not good for you. It should only be eaten in moderation, which America has never been good at moderation of anything. I eat a filet (medium rare, i am no barbarian) about twice a year, maybe a burger quarterly. It is absurd to see how much meat (animals killed) is wasted and discarded in America.

Tofu cooked the right way is great! we also eat tofu spaghetti quite often, just another preparation to consider.

Steak is pretty overrated, at least your typical steakhouse cuts. If I’m spending $40-50 on an entree I’d prefer more creative food and more than just an unsauced piece of meat on a plate accompanied by overpriced and often boring sides. I do like the cheaper cuts like skirt or hangar, but they are usually served in more interesting ways.

Skirt is amazing and undervalued. Perhaps my favorite.

Agreed. I'm all for a great steakhouse experience when it's a firm dinner. But I can cook a good steak and spend $20. For $60, I want something I can't make.

Also, Oak has recently come to Raleigh and it's the best steakhouse here by a mile.

There is no decent steak that is "best" cooked over medium. If the fat in your steak is such sinewy leather that it takes that much heat to make it edible you're simply eating a garbage steak. You'd be better off slow-cooking it like a short rib if that was the case.

The best steak I've ever had was a ribeye cap cooked rare plus. The marbling was fine enough that most of it melted during a quick sear, and whatever didn't quite melt was still tender and insanely good. Granted that cut is slightly easier to cook than a traditional ribeye, but rare and medium rare ribeyes have a lock on the next 5 or so best steaks I've tasted as well.

Since this has become the steak thread - and ribeye caps got brought up, I'll throw this out there. The best steaks I've ever made were really thick prime ribeye caps - salt brined for several hours - then rinsed, seasoned, and sous vide at 135 degs or so for a couple of hours - then a quick sear for a crust. Melt in your mouth goodness with good beefy flavor.

Sorry that I want to enjoy living life bro. I can't imagine actually wanting to get out of bed and do anything if I knew that all I could eat that day was lame veggies.

pretty big red flag if you think vegetables are lame

what is wrong with you people?

Yeah, I love most veggies. I eat a lot of salads, vegetable soups and roasted veggies. I mean, if you're making pork bbq, don't you also have to make slaw, collards and black eyed peas?
