Official 2018-19 NBA Season Thread - NBA Finals Raptors Win #WeTheNorth

Simmons averaged more assists per 100 possessions than Magic through the first 2 years of their careers.

If you want to try to compare Ben Simmons to Magic Johnson then go right ahead. That would pretty much seal the deal on the uselessness of #advancedstats as a measuring stick.

embiid is much more yao than hakeem to me, and i don't mean that as an insult

When he's healthy, Embiid is much more like Hakeem than Yao. As great as Yao was, he wasn't mobile. That's Embiid's greatest strength.

One guy who has caught my attention this summer is Svi Mykhailiuk. He's been playing really well in all the Rico Hines games, and with the right amount of minutes next year he looks like he could develop into a nice offensive roleplayer.

From NBA Hoop Rumors, Simmons salary can increase if he makes an all NBA Team:

Here’s what Simmons’ next contract will look like, based on the NBA’s current cap projections for 2020/21:

Year No All-NBA (25%) 3rd Team (28%) 2nd Team (29%) 1st Team (30%)
’20/21 $29,250,000 $32,760,000 $33,930,000 $35,100,000

’22/23 $33,930,000 $38,001,600 $39,358,800 $40,716,000

A good way to incentivize him, but hopefully not at the cost of playing selfishly and going for numbers instead of wins.

Note he went straight to assists per 100 possessions. When someone dives straight to any millennial stat, it is a dead sign that they know their position is shit so has to be artificially framed a certain way.

you have a hard time grasping normalizing something for 100 possessions?

let's try it this way: comparing their first two seasons, Simmons averaged more assists per game in fewer minutes per game on a team that averaged fewer points per game -- can you follow that?

Sure I can follow it, but it purports to "normalize" something that cannot be "normalized". There are 1,000 other variables at play that are not encompassed by that stat. Who were the teammates? Were they shooting from their best spots? Were any other them out injured for extended periods? Who was the coach and how much control did he have? How many fast breaks versus how many set plays? What teams were the playing? What style defense did they play? How many other assists were attempted but not made? What was the smart decision in each situation? It goes on and on. So the advanced stat takes a raw stat and attempts to "normalize" it to make it appear like it is somehow more valuable, but in fact is just pushing the raw stat in the direction of 1 of the 1,000 variables. So I'll stick with the raw stats plus the #eyetest over the skewed advanced stats every time.

Interesting breakdown here.

Interesting but pretty meaningless stats above unless (maybe) if you are the owner.

Some teams don't have a single player on their 2019 roster who was on the 2008 roster. NBA salary floor says a team pays a lot per win when not trying too hard to win.

In addition to sucking by every advanced statistical measure, I can confirm that the Hornets also fail to meet the eye test and suck based on Ws and Ls.

Damn. Damn. The Hornets should just fold.

A friend of mine asked me recently why I wasn’t a Hornets fan. Part of the reason is they drafted JR Reid, Zo, and LJ who I didn’t like in college. Sadly two of those are two of the only two good players they’ve drafted.

Totally get not liking JR Reid and kind of get not liking LJ, but Zo.... Man, Mourning always seemed like a hard working/defense first all-around solid guy that was easy to root for, unless Hoya Paranoia bothered you (which I actually loved).

Also, like Mourning for turning down Dean and UNC at a time when almost no one from VA, NC, SC did that.
