He’s a former starter who got passed over even though he’s already getting formal looks from the CFL. He could go somewhere else and start 3 more years or stay here and risk only starting 1 more year.

If we saw this happen to another program, we would expect him to transfer.
 
Wake officially has the best backup QB in the league. Upperclassman Hartman will put up huge numbers and he understands that.
 
Newman as number one makes sense. Both quarterbacks can throw and both can run. Newman was better at staying in the pocket and delivering the ball under duress. He is better at shedding tackles, he runs with more power and will deliver a block when required. His advantage his his size and strength. I expect Sam to play and I doubt Clawson is concerned about a red shirt. Injuries are part of the package with this offense and Sam is a great option if Newman is having an off day. Putting Hartman on a bench may also increase the possibility of transfer. Clawson and the team need both Newman and Hartman for peak performance. When your philosophy is to go 1-0, use all the tools in your toolbox if necessary.

No, not every program. Not even a majority of programs.
 
not surprised Newman got the job, but I did figure Clawson would wait til the week of the first game

1. Where can he go where he is guaranteed to start for three years?

2. I dare say at least 90% of college QBs redshirt their first year. Hartman should have, but he got thrust into playing before he was really ready (more physically than anything) and did pretty darn good. Hopefully he will get to do that this year - while still playing in some games. Heck, I would be shocked if he doesn't start at least a game or two this season. The worst case scenario is Newman starts 6 games and Hartman starts 6 games.

No certainty that he plays all or any of 3 years if transfers.
No certainty that he would start only one year at WF; could start two years.
 
Congrats to Newman. He showed some real special things last year and looking forward to watching him continue and further develop as QB1.

Hopefully this also inspires Hartman to keeping working hard. IIRC Hartman got really sick in high school and lost a lot of weight. Having some time to develop under Newman should not be a big problem if he can red shirt this year or next year. He would still theoretically have 2 years to be the starter at Wake. All contingent upon our QB1 staying healthy, which has been challenging for Wake's QBs under Clawson's offense.

We need a solid QB2. If not Hartman, then how are the other QBs looking?
 
Keep in mind Hartman could also redshirt next season when Newman is more established and Kern is further along and more capable of being #2.
 
He could. But if he gets demoted that far into his career, and behind an underclassman, that could be the signal that does send him packing. Seems more palatable to get the immediate mulligan on the redshirt year.
 
A redshirt wouldn’t be a demotion. It would be saving his eligibility.
 
Hartman is a sprained ankle away from saving the season. Bryant didn't get a Naty Ring for a reason, he wasn't there when they needed him.
 
No. Just thinking big picture.
 
We don't play a team rated significantly higher than us until Game 9. This season sets up very well for us.
 
Those rankings are surprisingly reasonable, although my biased opinion is we will end up higher than we start and State will end up lower.
