KP Report BC Eagles -- Wednesday 6 pm ESPNU

Going back a fair bit here, but I think an argument could certainly be made that Taron Downey and Brandon Childress are of similar ability.

If you look at Taron's numbers, they aren't better than Chill's... Other than 3pt shooting.

I'm in the camp that Childress is asked to do too much... It looked like he tried to get others involved in the 1st half against BC (5 assists, 1 TO), before taking a lot more shots in the 2nd half. Definitely too little, too late.

Agree that folks are overvaluing Taron a bit here.

Also, throat slash.

Taron was always a complimentary player. BChil probably should be a bit more complimentary but he's in more of a starring role here. BChil has the ability to create off the dribble a bit more than Taron and BChil seems to be a better passer. But yeah, I agree, they're fairly comparable. BChil will certainly end his career with more PPG and assists, although likely at a bit lower percentage than TD. Part of that is due to the fact that TD, again, was more of a 3rd or 4th option rathern than the focus of a defense.

Sharone's dad getting heated at the anti-Manning crowd on Twitter.

Dude should probably keep his mouth shut and be thankful that his son has a spot to play and earn a degree at Wake Forest. If not for the shitty team and his buddy Manning that the fans are complaining about, his son wouldn't have any business playing at Wake or anywhere else in the ACC.

Bottom line is it's pretty tough for a point guard to be successful on a team that doesn't shoot it well from deep but also doesn't have a legitimate starting power forward or center.

He also had offers from Clemson Arkansas and Auburn so he would still be playing in a major conference.

He would definitely be playing in a major conference. Don’t be dumb.

But when we needed Taron's scoring he delivered. RE: Assists, he didn't have the ball as much as Brandon. Taron was massively better on D.

This is a perfect example of when numbers lie.

Taron was much, much better than Brandon. It's not even close.

Ok, fine, he could have ridden the bench for a couple years before transferring at another "major" program.

It's weird that even the most strident anti-manning posters still kind of blame the players for not developing.

Wright has talent. If he had gone somewhere else, gotten good coaching and good player development, he would be playing a lot better than he is now.

Which part?

Basically all of it.

You can't look at the numbers in a vacuum. Who does Brandon have to share his stats with? We don't have anyone as good a Vytas on this team much less Justin, Eric or CP3. Before CP3 got to Wake, Taron averaged more assists as a starter than Brandon did last year (4.2 v. 4).

Brandon's numbers are meaningless. He's a good kid, but he's not as good a shooter, defender or leader as Taron was.

I’m sure BChill is very complimentary of his teammates. We’d be better off if he’d been in a situation where he could be a complementary player.

Ehh. Dude was still a very lowly rated 3-star. How many players rated in the ~300 range coming out of school have gone on to develop into good players in the ACC? It's gotta be a tiny amount.

Going back as far as I can in 247, here are a list of Wake recruits rated similarly or lower to Wright's 296. Wright is "talented" only in as much as he's being compared to some of the worst players to ever grace the floor of the ACC. Of this list, only Devin Thomas stands out as actually being "talented". Maybe Weaver and Wilbekin, but Wilbekin was only talented in comparison to what was around him too.

  • David Weaver 258
  • Casey Crawford 297
  • Anthony Fields 273
  • Daniel Green 422
  • Devin Thomas 268
  • Madison Jones 277
  • Mitchell Wilbekin 265
  • Rondale Watson 395
  • Donovan Mitchell 269
  • Melo Eggleston 275
  • Sunday Okeke 529
  • Jamie Lewis 277
  • Michael Wynn 424
  • Jacobi Neath 282
  • Tariq Ingraham 460
  • Ody Oguama 515

Do I have to be the ref between Shorty and Mich?

I'd go with Mich. He's bigger and younger.

I think it's probably a decent number. Just off the top of my head, Ky Bowman, Jerome Robinson, Mfiondu Kabengele, and Marcquise Reed were all ranked very low, yet they were all-ACC players in the last few years. The first 3 are all in the NBA now. I don't think Reed even had a ranking coming out of high school.

Of course the exceptions stand out...because you wouldn't even know the names of those that aren't the exceptions. That said, if it's true that a decent number develop, it sounds like Wright Sr. should be pissed at Danny for not developing his boy into an all-ACC player and NBA pro!
