KP Report: UNCC 49ers -- ESPNU Sunday 6pm

The complete lack of fundamentals on this team is what I just hate. If nothing else, we should be fundamentally sound. Apparently Self didn't teach that at Kansas of Manning was out that day.

It's poor fundamentals combined with poor schemes which equals really bad basketball. This is supposed to be entertainment - but I've got to say, I don't get much pleasure from watching a parade of turnovers and poor shots on the offensive end and constant blow-bys, open backdoor cuts, and wide open threes on defense.

Very good synopsis of last night. For some reason, I watched every damn minute.

“You know, we fouled them during that stretch and gave them a chance to get points at the free-throw line,” Coach Danny Manning said. “But for us, defensively that was a good stretch to guard the way that we guarded and limit their scoring opportunities. We just have to do a better job of playing defense with our head and our feet.”

Probably need to use our hands too, you know steals and block are nice

“We should’ve taken a foul. That’s what we were screaming at and that’s what we talked about, we weren’t able to execute that,” Manning said of not fouling after Childress’ miss. “We just didn’t execute what we needed to down the stretch in that situation.”

Is there some reason your teams seem to never do the things you "say" you tell them to do Danny?

“Their pack-line defense was really hard to penetrate. I mean, we didn’t have enough paint touches — not as much as we had in the past,” said junior forward Olivier Sarr, who had seven points on 2-for-9 shooting and 13 rebounds. “And it was just — they made it hard for us, they have a really great team, a really great defense and they really made it hard for us.”

Paint touches don't mean shit if you're seven feet tall and can hardly ever put it in the basket for a few feet away Olivier. Maybe learn how to have some touch around the rim instead of just throwing the ball at the rim like a hot potato!

This Charlotte squad may end up taking Conference-USA. Still no excuse for losing to them. I wish Danny Manning would start to emphasize something other than paint touches in these post-game interviews.

You are watching it wrong.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game. Just pull for whoever plays Wake knowing that each loss is the best thing for the program. You get to laugh at Sarr's ineptness around the basket, Chills Basketball IQ, and the amazing defense and the flow of the offense.

You realize that they are the rated at or near the bottom of the conference in all the computer rankings, right?

Wow they went from a cupcake a few days ago to Conference USA winners?

UNCC is improved. A big reason is that they have a competent coach.

Yes "I'm a senior, I carry this team" mentality is poison to a TEAM SPORT LIKE BASKETBALL. He's too selfish. Period. I lost count on how many of his plays resulted in turnovers last night. Its the same almost every game. Yes, he hit some "big shots" but he had to because of the hole that he and his team mates had dug themselves.
If you change the name on the back of the jersey from Childress to Crawford, people would be going apoplectic over how he plays simetimes, but it seems like people are more reserved in calling out his instances of bad play due to his father's WF legacy.

Brandon is a good player when he plays within himself and plays as part of the team. His hero ball antics are tiresome and troublesome, but sadly he's going to continue to do it as he has (luckily?) made a few of those shots and WF really doesn't have any other obvious, guaranteed options to use instead. He really should not being called upon to lead an ACC team. He should be a very good 6th or 7th man off the bench to focus on what he does best, versus what he is asked?/allowed? to do now.

UNCC # 246 went 10+ minutes in the second half without a field goal and still, still beat Wake Forest. Just think about that.

Charlotte is better than they were projected to be. However their projection seems to be the worst team in CUSA and even if they improved by like 50-75 spots (which is a massive improvement) they'd still be middle of the pack and barely a top half team in college basketball

I don’t think not calling Brandon out has anything to do with his Dad— I think that in spite of the fact that he really isn’t strong at any aspect of the game, he appears to be a good kid kid who has worked very hard on his game to maximize his limited natural ability. Crawford had significant more ability , but was easy to dislike with his grandstanding.

Really? Who's projected to win the CUSA?

WKU, LT, and UTEP are all top 110 (first two are top 75) in KP right now.

Even in Sagarin (probably better early season grasp on teams than KP) Charlotte is 9th in CUSA over 100 spots worse than Western Kentucky.
