Syracuse Game Time 12:30 pm, RSN

The reality is 6-7 games in it felt like this could be a special/great season. 5 games later and it feels like a very good season. Injuries are part of that but that’s when other guys have to step up. Today was very disappointing.

Agreed.

The last 3 teams you listed all had winning seasons and are going to bowls.

BC, UNC, and FSU are 6-6. USU is the only one with a winning season. USU beat NM to get to 7-5.

So, if they win their bowl games, then WF will have beaten 3 more teams with winning records. Hope that will make everyone happier. Weird how hard people are trying to take a dump on the football season. Definitely some ups and downs, but more ups from my perspective. Love our coach and the direction of the program.

If before the season started, it was known the Strnad would miss half the season, Newman would miss the FSU game and most of the game at CUSE, and Washington and Surratt would miss the last 4, no one would’ve had this team winning 8 games.

Just got back from the game. I am impressed with how we seem to discover unique ways to lose. When you make that many mistakes, it doesn't matter how good the other team is, you make it a lot easier to take the L. It was funny to think how many of these ancillary games were going our way, if only we could win on the road against a 4 win team.

The crowd around us was generally welcoming and friendly. There was one guy a few rows back who yelled at me to quiet down, but that wasn't anything I haven't heard other places.

We spent most of the last week talking about "if we beat Cuse." For the next four weeks, we haven't beaten a team with a winning record.

Look at where our program has come since the mid-season defensive debacle (caused by injuries and the ex-DC) last year. I think we have gone 11-5. When we lost Strnad, Washington and Surratt, we were a different team. Losing Greer today was another huge loss. I’ll take 8-4 every year at WFU for the rest of my life. Some of you guys must be young or have bad memories. Quit bitching.

Small margin of error to succeed is coded language for the team really isn't that good and needs to have some luck to win games/have winning seasons. Good teams don't have small margins of error because they blow bad teams out and win games on their schedule that they are supposed to win.

No and it should come as no surprise to anyone that our pure talent is not and never has been at a level where we are going to win games on that alone. We have to play really well and execute really well to win games against most of the teams we play. We certainly can’t overcome 5 turnovers against a team like Syracuse who although having a bad year, we simple don’t have a huge talent advantage over. We are going to be in a lot of close games, we just are. Clawson certainly isn’t a coach who “just wants to keep it close and hope to pull it out at the end,” that’s just how it’s going to be until a coach figures out the magic sauce to recruiting at the level of a Clemson or something. How many teams in the country don’t play a lot of close games? How many of those teams do we have a chance of recruiting at a level they do? We have a good football team this year, with a lot of heart. If they didn’t, we wouldn’t have even had a chance today with the turnovers and injuries. We just have to play really well and execute really well and when we don’t we can lose to most teams. Call that LOWF if you want, I call it reality. Is that frustrating as crap sometimes, sure is.

We played like shit today. Stop.

No excuse. I don’t give a fuck about anythng else. When it comes time to play - play. Cuse sucks. We are better. We sucked. The players should be pissed that they laid suck an egg. Again no excuse.

Jamie Newman was out of his mind. No idea whats up there. Then jones has a money balled ripped away from him like a little bitch. So yes sage makes that play but Jones is on scholarship too.

Arm tackling bullshit, throws not even close. Penalties.

Plus the offense has ZERO imagination. As I said in an earlier post wouldn’t be nice for wake to run play where everyone says, gee didn’t see that coming.

Ditto Diver, Today and Louisville were shit shows, and Wake sucked. Beat ass and win against an inferior team. The game today really sucked and the Wake elite dont care and will never care. It is why the Wake job is the best D-1 football job in the country. Go to bowl games and finish above 5oo and you can make millions and wake will love you forever. Clawson has been great but he really didnt have team ready to go today, or against Louisville which were two really big games this year.

The debacles on special teams and the poor tackling on defense seem like coaching and player development issues though. Special teams was so bad that it's frankly shocking how unprepared the team was. The alligator arm tackling is bad technique and coaching. The delayed whistle scrums with Syracuse pushing the pile forward 10 yards were frustrating too.

Well, our football program hasn't reached Alabama level, but at least part of our message board has.

Clawson is the one who talked about being ranked is nice but he had higher aspirations for the program.

If that is the case, then losing to a Syracuse team playing their back-up with no bowl hopes is disappointing.
If that is the case, then you can't have senioritis.
If that is the case, then you need to be flexible and inventive in trying to figure out ways to maximize your chances to win.
Our last 4 games, we scored 12 points in the 1st quarter running what appeared to be our base package every game.

Our program needs to learn how to play for more than six wins and in-state rivalries.

I love Clawson and think he is a smart coach and will keep Wake on an upward swing.

That said, I think he needs to make some adjustments to his thinking now that he is playing in a power 5 conference. At Bowling Green and some of his past jobs, he was able to recruit players good enough to win games without a lot of misdirection.
Wake will never be able to line up and run plays that the opponent expects and just out execute their opponent.

I think Wake will always need to be creative in a way that Clemson and Alabama never will. The reliance on the RPO without more wrinkles is not going to be enough. Wake had the talent this year to get very creative.

Clawson is growing the program and we have made some strides each year. This will hopefully be the next step. We play well when we are desperate for a win (NC State last year, for example) but not when we are the favorite to win.

If only Wake had been smart and hired Pete Lembo (per Ph's recommendation) back in 2013, we wouldn't have to worry about this!!1!

Interesting takes on this thread from someone who predicted 7 regular season wins in the preseason prediction thread...

Like most people, I didn't expect the ACC to be so weak this year. Also, like most people, I have come to expect Wake will choke at least once on a game they should win. Given how bad our schedule actually was in retrospect, 9 or 10 wins would have been a good season. Syracuse was nowhere near what they were expected to be in preseason. Our schedule was weak, going 8-4 was the result of 2 choke jobs against beatable teams. Other games were closer than they needed to be. Not a bad season, but not as good as it should have been.
