Ruggiero has re-written the Wake offensive record books. Two of our top 8 rushers all time (Colburn, Carney), 3 of the top 7 receiving seasons all time (Dortch, Surratt, Hinton), most TDs (Wolford), most yards (Wolford), most yards and points for the team, etc.

The defense has been much weaker than the offense since Elko left, but I think Hemphill has them trending in the right direction in his first full season. In particular, third down defense was much better.

Kick coverage really hurt us a few times this year, and that definitely needs to improve.

As Clawson said in his press conference yesterday, he will study this season closely, make changes, and attack 2020 with a vengeance. I can’t wait to see it.

Chris is right that those numbers get inflated by the number of possessions.

The number of really talented players on offense indicates that Wake should score more, not less. I cannot argue with last years offense, but this years offense was so predicated on that slow mesh working.

There was nothing to our offense if that was handled as it was most of he second half of the year. The offense was incredibly predictable. So few screens. Almost no misdirection. No passes from our wide receiver that started at QB. I cant even conceive of why Wake never tried or at least faked using Hinton as a thrower.
 
I’m going to start another thread later to discuss this in detail but we ran more plays than all but one team this year.

That one team was Hawaii. They ran one more play than we did. They played 15 games. And by “all” I’m including the NFL. Not only that but our defense was on the field for more plays than all but 15 college teams. Our players took and gave more hits and collisions than almost every football team at any level this season.

Clawson has to ask himself if a team with an NFL WR, game breaker at RB, good tough running QB, but depth concerns at OL and TE really needs to run at an extremely fast pace depending heavily on the RPO.

As a 1971 graduate, typing that statement felt bizarre. Unfortunately, Ron Wellman made it a fact.
 
Fans always complain about play-calling, but WF has a savvy coaching staff which has demonstrated that it can score a lot of points when there is talent and it's healthy.

All of that said, when you have a player like Kendall Hinton who has thrown for 1500+ yards and 8 TDs through his sophomore year, find it hard to understand how WF could not find a few situations to use his ability to throw the ball at any point over the last two seasons (not one pass in two years). Seems like a weapon that you have to exploit.

Teams must respect Hinton's ability to run/catch, and he already demonstrated his effectiveness as Power V level QB. Use him in the Wildcat, let him run a few plays to soften the defense and then hit a deep ball. Run a jet sweep with a pass option. Double pass when you have a trips formation. Philly special. Hate it when fans feel like they can call the plays (which is what I just did, so I should STFU) as they can't even begin to scratch the surface of the depth of knowledge that goes into running a program and getting a team ready to play on the level that WF plays. Even so, simply feel like WF left key points on the board, by not using Hinton's unique skill as elite receiver that also has superior throwing skills. May be a long time before WF has another player with that variety of skills.

I am Clawson homer and love our football program, but feel like that criticism is fair.
 
Yes we needed more creativity in our offense. It was apparent in the virginia tech game that we needed to put some wrinkles in the offense and we did pretty much nothing. The offensive coaching staff failed this team.

All of this, ESPECIALLY in the bowl game, which is a reward for the players. Let the 5th year senior who has been a huge part of the program run a series. He knows how to run the offense. Move Newman to WR, TE, whatever. Have some fun. Really disappointing that this never happened.

People love to bust on Grobe for his conservatism. He let Alphonso Smith play offense in a bowl game for crying out loud. (It failed, and probably caused Grobe to be more conservative). Clawson makes Grobe look like a riverboat gambler.

I'm pretty much in this same camp. Even if we never chose to directly involve Hinton in pass plays, I have to believe there are sets or "looks" that we could have used to help keep defenses guessing. Even an orbit sweep once in a while would have greatly helped. Running a highly predictable offense with two of our best receivers in school history injured is just a real head scratcher. I give Grobe and staff tons of credit for their imagination with Kenny Moore in 2006.

Newman is going nowhere. Clawson is going nowhere. The reason they are going nowhere is because there is no demand for them.
 
I must say that I passionately made these points before we were half way through the schedule. I got little agreement then and much grief. Glad to feel somewhat justified as far as at least others finally seeing these points.

There's trolling and then there's just plain dumb. A slew of second place finishes in the SEC East when you have all of the resources and local recruiting ground of the state of Georgia is not good enough.

I don't care what people at Miami were expecting, but I think he surpassed expectations in his first two years there and they've got a long road back to relevance after the garbage season they just posted.
 
All the offensive records we've set the past few years and all the points we've scored, but I still can't help but think it should have been even more (especially in our "big games") if our coaches were not so unimaginative. The delayed handoff with Carney just doesn't work once you've run it 10 times. Hinton could have done so much more. Over using Newman as a runner and getting him banged up ...we all could name more. I just feel like things on offense have been very good, but they could have been great.

Bill Dooley followed up Al Groh’s passing offense with a boring power I offense which ran about 10 plays (Mike Elkins told me this). But even Dooley finally used some imagination during the 1992 bowl season and we scored on end around passes against Duke and Oregon. High schools run these plays. It’s not rocket science.
