Greatest cover songs (better than originals)

There are a lot of dead links on this thread so not sure if it was mentioned before, but it was a couple of decades before I realized Istanbul (not Constantinople) was a cover.

Also, I nominate the following:
"Cum on Feel the Noize" (Quiet Riot over Slade)
"I Will Survive" (Cake over Gloria Gaynor)
"Got to Get You Into My Life" (Earth Wind & Fire over the Beatles)
"(What's So Funny About) Peace Love and Understanding" (Elvis Costello over.... somebody)
Hot take warning - "Satisfaction" (Devo over Rolling Stones)

In honor of Neil Peart - everything on the "Feedback" album (Rush released an all covers of 60s songs that heavily influenced them).

The Devo "Satisfaction" cover may be the best of all time. I'm with you there.

Going the other way, I always enjoyed this grunged out version of Devo's "Girl You Want" by Soundgarden.

I think Field Music did this Ringo cut off the White Album a good service. The album this is on is full of fun covers (Syd Barrett, Roxy Music, Leonard Cohen, Pet Shop Boys, Robert Wyatt, John Cale)

i like that Kent's title is "JTNB." Wonder what happened to that dude.

The great Nick Lowe wrote (What's so Funny 'Bout) Peace Love and Understanding when he was in Brinsley Schwarz.

And Nick produced the first few Elvis records, which is how he ended up with that one. Old pals from the Stiff Records days.

Stapleton's Tennessee Whiskey is sooooo much better than DAC's original version. They're night and day different. The original cover by George Jones was even worse than the original. Just brutal to listen to.

I'm partial to the Ryan Adams-Emmylou version of "Return of the Grievous Angel" over the Gram Parsons-Emmylou original

too bad we can't like Ryan Adams any more

Wait, we can't like Ryan? I didn't get the memo. Fuck, do I even want to google it?

Talking about producers, a buddy got a guitar that was used by and signed by Nile Rodgers at a local pawn shop. I wonder who the original owner was.

He was generally a possessive dick to his lady friends and would torch their projects, but the big thing is that he tried to get a 15 year old naked online, I think. Something like that.

phoebe bridgers hates him for what he did but also simultaneously misses him like a little kid

Maybe it was Nile Rodgers. That's cool, though, Nile Rodgers is a genius.
