Manning Buyout Negotiations Have Begun

Each day is going to bring significantly worse news than the previous one regarding COVID-19

So, the best time to announce a firing over the next few months, at least, is right now

All of this Currie hate is unfounded at this point. Manning has not been retained. All of the quasi-credible info we have is suggesting he will be let go this week, perhaps as early as today. Relax and let this play out. If he retains Manning then fire away.

Agree

The continued silence doesn’t seem like a good sign. We need some good news. Cmon Currie!!

The longer this drags on the more likely he’s gone and they’re just buttoning up the buyout term. If he was coming back there would be no reason to hold that information quiet so I’d expect we’d hear that pretty soon after the season ended.

I agree with this. I don’t understand why they would hold out on announcing he’s coming back. Seems like they could announce that at any time. If they were to announce they’re firing him, seems like they would try and find the right time to do so. I’ve said I think they should wait until recruiting opens again, because there’s no advantage in having a new coach until then. But it’s not up to me. The longer they wait, I think, the better in the current situation.

As of now all the best coaching candidates are available. If we wait we run the risk of getting beat to the punch for our top choices. I see no advantage to waiting. The world doesn’t stop because of this virus. It is changing the way we conduct business but the work still must get done. Right now you can still fly candidates in on a private plane and show off our facilities. That may no longer be the case in a week or two. We need to move this along as quickly as possible.

Steve Forbes would be fine, but I'd be more excited if we landed a big name like Beilein or Matta. Older, sure, but they could right the ship for the next coach.

at this point i'm fine with anyone not named [Redacted] or manning.

The thing with a coach coming back is you don’t have to announce anything at all.
Yes and no. Wake doesn't have to necessarily announce that he's coming back but they'd most likely leak it to the established media and/or put out some publicity about looking ahead to next season. Clemson announced Brownell was returning, while WF did it last season, so it's semi-common for something to come out if a coach has questions about his job stability.

The transfer portal is a reason to make the hire yesterday. Transfers will be key to turning this thing about sooner rather than later.

Actually sent an email about an hour ago asking if they'll make any kind of announcement if he's retained. Not going off of anything concrete, just want to get a sense of whether we'll get an announcement regardless or if it's a different situation from last year.

Yeah, give is to a Wes Miller kind of guy if we have to. Miller would take this job in a second and he'd be cheap. I'd take that over Danny 10 times outta 10

No he wouldn't. Cheap is relative, but any coach (their agent) is going to demand an ACC salary. Yes, probably less than a proven coach. But a mid-major moving up is still going to require a significant financial commitment. If we won't offer that, they will wait for the next offer.

I mean, DonaldRoss assured us Miller would work for less than a million...

The fact that VT gave Mike Young a 5 year contract that starts at $2 million per year and escalates to $2.75 million per year (5 years for $12 million + incentives) confirms that Wes or Forbes or any other mid-major coach is likely to get at least a $2 million annual salary. Young made less than $500 per year at Wofford. Maybe that changes a little given the current crisis, but whoever WF hires is going to get some really solid coin.
