Manning Buyout Negotiations Have Begun

I still think you are wrong.

If we make a coaching change, I'd still expect to see more transfers (beyond Wynn). I think I initially said 3+ total... I still think that is reasonable.

It's actually kind of amazing that Wynn is the only one who has entered the transfer portal when you look at the numbers from the rest of D1. Maybe that means the WFU players are waiting to see how things play out and I'm wrong about a mass exodus... But I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

That's not what 22 or I said. But saying the same thing got vastly different responses.

Our potential 1st team All ACC big man is a goner if Manning stays, soooo.

I know what you said. If we make (what you think) is a good hire, then we won't see transfers. What did I get wrong?

I wholeheartedly want us to make a coaching change, but I expect that change to come with significant roster turnover.

It depends on what you call "significant". If you think losing bench players is significant, you could have a point. But you have also posted that we could lose some of our best players which doesn't seem likely. This is especially true if Sarr wants to play in the NBA.

It won’t.

Vicious (and familiar) cycle we have seen previously. Danny hangs on another year only to lose his good players. We then suck the next year, after which Danny hangs on another year only to lose his good players. Rinse and repeat.

Time to end the cycle, though I can understand the lack of a move yet given the optics of spending $15 million to fire a University employee while others undoubtedly hang on for dear life.

I quantified my guess at 3+ weeks/months ago. It doesn't come from some insider knowledge. I just get the sense that most of the team really likes playing for Manning, even though I don't understand why.

3+ transfers feels significant to me... At least in quantity. I have no idea who they'd be (aside from Wynn, obviously).

And yeah, I do think we could lose some of our best players... Again, no insider knowledge whatsoever.

I am skeptical about anyone claiming to know whether players and recruits are staying or leaving before we even know: a) if a coaching change will be made; b) who the new coach is.

I am even more skeptical about anyone already claiming to be correct about players staying or leaving at this point.

I mean he took the job when no one else wanted it. And we put up flipping billboards around the city calling for our prior coach to be fired. Sure DM hasn't done anything to improve the situation, but that's not really the point. DM took this job with promises and extended his stay for more promises. Why in the world would he not expect to be paid what was agreed on?

We don't know that no one else wanted it - we have no idea who was approached. The billboards served to show we have a passionate fanbase, if small, nothing more. The last guy was a failure and the billboards just pointed that out. What promises did DM take the job with? You, nor the rest of us, know a thing about it. All that being said, I don't blame him for expecting to be paid every penny the contract calls for - anybody would do the same.

Other than Sarr and Chaundee, those guys are not going to have many D1 opportunities other than WF.

I rather enjoyed the billboards. Was just pointing out the crappy level of our program when DM was hired. And I was just assuming nobody wanted what RW was offering because DM was definitely a tier 3 coach. I mean we're sitting here talking about Beilein and Matta and DM was at the top of our list? Just using commonsense.

I did somewhat venture a guess that RW and DM had a verbal agreement that led to the contract extension and favorable buyout...Who knows. But it's pretty clear DM was in the driver's seat on his demands and got one heck of a contract. That's apparently what it took to get DM to come, so why would he not want what was agreed to? Seems pretty clear to me.

Honestly, good. Worst case scenario is that both Manning and Sarr come back. If Manning is back for one more year, I want Sarr and Brown to both leave, and go ahead and eliminate any chance that those guys drag the team to any sort of semi-respectable record that might save DM further.

There are 353 D1 colleges. As poorly as WF has played for the last decade, even in it's worst seasons, WF is in the top half of D1 college basketball (which is no accomplishment given WF resources and recruiting budget). Miles Overton, Anthony Fields, Madison Jones, Rondale Jones, Samuel Japhet Mathias found schools interested in them. As poorly as WF has recruited recently, there are plenty of D1 schools (most of them weak basketball programs) that would be happy to take any scholarship player on WF's roster.

Also, agree with RJ that they are plenty of Power 6 programs that would love to have at least 5 players on WF's roster (Sarr, Chaundee, Massoud, Neath and Mucius… Ody has also shown enough to get some interest too) and at least 2 of WF's recruits (Watson and Gibson).

Or, we could fucking be proactive and get Sarr off his ass and go visit Currie (if he has not done so already). If Sarr went to Currie today and said, Hey, this is so tiring. Practices are a slog - I find myself pining for the old days back in rural France training with coaches who had me excited to play. It is ironic that Manning as a big man coach has taught me so much, but yet I find myself not looking forward to another year with him as my game coach. If he stays another year, I am going to leave early and go back to France. Nothing personal. I like Coach Manning, but he is not the leader we need next year with a new point guard blah blah blah.

Manning would be canned a day later.

I still think Manning IS going to be canned without a player intervention, but rather than souring over milk not yet spilled, go get it the fuck done. Those that know Sarr, tell him. Those that know Kyrie, have him give Sarr a call ;-)
