Stock Market Crash

There's no need for a delay at all for means testing. The same data that we use to send out the first checks would have things like zip code, IRS ID# and W-2 info. It's right there.

Thinking giving high earners money will have any impact is silly.

How do you quickly determine who gets the money for children in split families when many people haven't even filed their taxes and claimed the kids yet?

Yes, I noticed something like that as I read it last night as well. Seemed stupid.

As usual, you make no sense. If that restaurant or small business makes that amount of money $1000 isn't going make any difference.

Well it would be $2400 for the majority of them. The fact you think $2400, or even $1200, is an insignificant amount of money is concerning. Just because a restaurant or retail store had a strong year in 2018 and yielded over $100K for their owner certainly doesn't mean it did so last year. Or is currently.

It makes far more sense to distribute the funds upfront and tax them later based on 2020 income. Not hard to figure out. For everyone but you.

what is a staggered amount? what are you talking about?

As you can see by the chart Tiltdeac posted, different people and different sized families as well different earning amounts will be getting different checks.

Hence, staggered amounts.

What if you make substantially more or less money now than you did in the 2018 filing year?

Cut checks now, recoup later

Recouping may end up costing more than is recouped. It's not necessary.

how are you going to identify which families are making 250k in 2020? or in the last 12 months?

Maybe you have 2 tax cycles to account for it. You are a duel income family of four with stable, good jobs in a large metro area. Add the tax credit when you file this year. Lost jobs and income, wait and file next year when your return is much lower.

How long will it take now to figure out? How many people is the government going to have to bring in to expeditiously make sure all regulations are met?

I guess now would be a fair time to point out that we are arguing with a poster who insists the USPS cannot drop even one day of delivery service because it would prevent people from being able to receive and mail in their bill payments on time.

Our president just compared the economy to "a rocket ship". We are being governed by my 4 year old.

the fact that 2020 taxes are due in over a year gives so many options for addressing the emergency now and handling it on the back end later

just get the money out there to everyone and figure it out

I really wish people understood how urgent missing a paycheck is for so many Americans. Just cut the checks.

You are talking about looking at the taxes for millions of people. Even being computerized, it will have to be verified. That takes time and man/hours.
