Manning Buyout Negotiations Have Begun

As much as I’d like to be an optimist, that doesn’t mean much. They aren’t going to tell the team multiple days before they announce it.

Right. I believe last year they found out Danny would be returning right before the press did (team meeting called).

Wow, if the team wants new leadership, they must not realize the power they hold. Let Brown, Sarr, and Mucius go to Currie's office and let him know they'd be excited for a change and that would go a long way in ending this bullshit era of Wake hoops.
So in summary: the AD, the team, and every fan wants a coaching change, but that may not be enough to get it done.

Huh?

What evidence do you have ‘the team’ wants new leadership and would be ‘excited’ for change ?

Up to now ‘the team’ has been part of the problem in that they like him, didn’t mail it in over the last 7-8 games and actually played hard down the stretch.

I always assumed the players like having Manning as their coach, but would be hilarious if not.

Maybe I'd be wrong about mass transfers following a Manning departure.

I guess you are getting stuff not on ESPN or Rivals. Duke got a grad transfer from Columbia. But there haven't been many other commitments.Of course, there are only 10 of EPSN's Top 100 available at this point.

None of the Top 7 transfers from Rivals have committed. Three out ESPN's Top 20 transfers have committed and only three of the Top 20 grad transfers have committed.

With nothing else going on, that seems very much stagnant.

~450 players in the transfer portal; ~100 grad transfers

If anything, the timeline for changes is earlier this year than in previous years given the early and abrupt end to the season. Coaches are calling these transfers and recruiting them to join their programs. I'm sure Danny & staff are also doing this, but if we're going to make a change then sooner is better.

I get your point that we haven't seen many commitments yet... But that is going to change dramatically over the next week or two.

Bigger names that have already moved:
Grant Sherfield - From Wichita State to Nevada
Brysen Goodine - From Syracuse to Providence
Ed Croswell - From LaSalle to Providence
Shareef O'Neal - From UCLA to LSU
Patrick Tape - Columbia to Duke
Seth Towns - Harvard to Ohio State

If some message board posters have #sauces that indicate that (some of) the team wants him gone, I am pretty sure the AD already has that information.

I've been critical of Currie making these random tweets lately about restaurants, but I think that was probably unfair. I still view him as an ally - like many of the rest of you, I think he knows DM needs to go and his FTQ seemed to point to that reality. So he probably is doing everything he can. Guess I'm extending that 'love and grace' to him also.

I still think he's on the verge of bungling this if too much more time goes by before any word one way or the other, because I do think that lack of communication disrespects the few loyal fans you've got. Last year's communication set a precedent and we can't be faulted for wanting that minimal standard to be upheld. But Currie might still be doing all he can in the face of serious headwinds and I'm going to keep giving him the benefit of the doubt for the moment.

The AD meets with the seniors after every season. You can probably guess which one backed the staff.

Only one transfer this year (so far) and none last year says the current players are not completely unhappy with Danny. After the multiple transfers in earlier years, I think we have a pattern developing.

It looks like it's going to take more time than before and it makes sense. That's 550 players with only 6 commitments (O'neal is also a unique situation due to his health and father's connection with LSU).

The two posters above that have some sort of pulse of the team both stated that the team would be excited for a change. I don't know any of the players, but apparently they know someone close enough to state that is the sentiment of the players.

That’s 450 players and a heck of a lot more than 6 commitments. Those listed were the only ones I thought noteworthy.

The link has the full list.

OK :)

But it makes a lot of sense that the major decisions haven't been made yet. Everything is slowing down.

Seems like they should meet with all the players, including those who have a stake in the future success of the program.

Agree with that logic, but the reality is that the players wishes have little to nothing to do with the decision to keep or fire Manning. If the money was readily available or if the buyout terms were more reasonable or if the economy hadn't tanked, Manning would be gone. If all of the players want Manning to stay or if all of the players want him gone, that's not going to be deciding factor in DM's future.

Sure. Players will typically support the staff and that is fine. Also, strongly disagree with those expecting the players to say bad things about their coach and recommend his dismissal. That’s not a fair position to put them in. Most years, that coach will be back and maintain control over their college career.

I mean, hear their experience but you don’t have to make decisions based on their wishes.

Yeah, the players may like Danny as a person, but they have to be getting tired of losing...

This is where it also matters that Wake has to recruit smart kids.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out the talent on this team for the last 3 years (and really, all 6 under Danny, but especially the last 3) outweighs the results on the court. Players know if they're not being put in position to succeed.
