Ongoing Dem Debacle Thread: Commander will kill us all

Fuck the goddamn travel ban. You trump supporters have literally nothing else to point to as far as Trumps federal response to this thing. What the hell has he done in like the past 2 months worth lauding? Jack shit. So you keep harping on weak, weak gaslit talking points about how stupendous Trumps action is and how everyone else was supposedly super against it. Idiots.

I still am confused on this wording calling it a "ban." Individual airlines canceled flights to/from China on their own. Sounds like Trump is retroactively taking credit for something he didn't do.

The same day Trump implemented the travel “ban” or whatever you want to call it, Pelosi implemented the “No Ban Act” which is congressional limitations on what Trump can do with the ban. The 40,000 people were literally American citizens, green card holders, and passport holders being repatriated.

yea there is some pretty obvious gaslighting going on

it's weird to see the talking points being echoed as if they're remotely true

Ignoring your gaslit misinformation...can you comment on what Trump has done since that time?

I stated that Biden opposing the travel ban because it was “xenophobic”, then criticizing Trump for not taking action early enough is extremely hypocritical. Meanwhile, Biden was holding rallies into March.

You didn't answer the question.

Are you saying that Trump isn't a xenohobic, bigoted racist? Please answer.

What are we even arguing about here? Yes the first infections in North America likely came from China in January, but there were multiple introductions from Europe and elsewhere soon after. There were holes all over the dam. Whether you put a patch over one of them, and how leaky that patch was, doesn't much matter.

I mean, that ad is clearly a xenophobic dogwhistle, but more or less is designed to do what juice suggested - rile up the base. Is it explicitly xenophobic? Not really, but it probably appeals to folks who see COVID-19 as the Chinese Virus, Wuhan Virus, or Kung Flu and who don't want to vote for Trump.

I'd be more opposed to it under normal circumstances, but given weak turnout the last couple of presidential elections and Biden's seeming inability or disinterest in actually running a campaign, what are our other options strategically?

So as I said, airlines canceled flights first. The so-called ban came later and is just Trump taking credit. From Jan 31:

All three major U.S. airlines announced the cancellation of flights to mainland China on Friday as the U.S. government unveiled additional steps to curb the spread of the coronavirus, which originated in China.

The trio of carriers, United Airlines Holdings Inc, Delta Air Lines Inc and American Airlines Group Inc, had already moved to reduce flights to China amid a sharp drop in demand due to the flu-like virus.

...

However, the administration was not considering “at the moment” more drastic actions like barring all flights from China, assistant Transportation Secretary Joel Szabat said at a White House briefing, noting that airlines were already voluntarily taking action to stop flights.

“There is no travel ban,” said Szabat, adding: “This is an evolving situation.”

“Gaslit misinformation”.... lol, when you choose not to believe things, it does not mean they are inaccurate.

Labeling people as xenophobic and racist for things that aren’t xenophobic and racist is very dangerous. That’s why there is so much divide in our country.

Experts: We need to slow the spread of the virus to buy time to come up with a testing strategy, build stockpiles, ready the country for the fight ahead.
Trump Solution: Implement a travel ban from the virus country of origin, ignoring all other entry points
Outcome: Virus spread is slowed to some degree but not completely, its impossible to stop a virus that spreads in an asymptomatic way
Trump: Mission accomplished, we will have zero or no cases.
Experts: The cases are coming, great we have slowed the spread somewhat now is the time to prepare.
Trump: Muffle the dissenting voices, I like low case numbers, lets go have some rallies
Few months later and yeah.....

“Gaslit misinformation”.... lol, when you choose not to believe things, it does not mean they are inaccurate.

No in this case it is pure misinformation. See the above several posts:

-The airlines curtailed the travel first. Trump just slapped his brand on it after others had already stuck their neck out
-Whether or not the 40,000 travelers were US citizens doesn’t mean anything if they were carriers. Also didn’t trump waffle on letting a ship containing confirmed US cases to dock?
-It didn’t matter. The virus was coming into the US from other countries.
-Biden didn’t call the ban xenophobic he called Trump xenophobic.

Any comments on what Trump has done in the nearly 3 months since his tremendous travel ban?

You’re choosing not to believe facts. You’re repeating lies you keep hearing repeated in the Republican echo chamber.

Airlines shut down flights. Biden didn’t call shutting down flights xenophobic. He was referring to the rhetoric Trump uses like “Chinese virus” and such.

-They wanted the citizens back before they were locked down by a communist regime. I see nothing wrong with that.
-Biden called Trump xenophobic an hour after the travel ban was implemented. Also used the phrase “xenophobic” in a tweet from Trump about the ban.

You are choosing to think everything Trump does is terrible, and everything Biden does is correct.

This is really absurd to watch happen in real time. The statement "lol, when you choose not to believe things, it does not mean they are inaccurate" is the most dangerously ironic statement I can think of in this era.

You are probably sitting in your home right now. You probably (hopefully) don’t have coronavirus. If you happened to get coronavirus, you would be able to get tested and treated. The numbers have been much more positive than initially estimated.

He's literally encouraging people to not stay at home and there are so few tests in production and being distributed around the country that it's hard to see when exactly we can safely return to somewhat normal.
